Pleurotomarioidea

Holotype of Perotrochus charlestonensis, from Askew (1988).

Belongs within: Vetigastropoda.
Contains: Platyschismatinae, Turbonellininae.

The Pleurotomarioidea, slit shells, are a group of marine gastropods represented in the modern fauna only by the family Pleurotomariidae. Members of this group have a shell with a labral slit, followed by a corresponding selenizone (Bouchet et al. 2005).

Vetigastropoda

Temnotropis carinata, from Knight et al. (1960).

Belongs within: Gastropoda.
Contains: Seguenzioidea, Amberleyoidea, Ataphridae, Trochoidea, Turbinoidea, Murchisoniidae, Cheeneetnukiidae, Hormotomidae, Porcellioidea, Gosseletinidae, Luciellidae, Eotomariinae, Neilsoniinae, Ptychomphalinae, Trochonematoidea, Pleurotomarioidea, Cocculinoidea, Lepetelloidea, Neomphaloidea, Fissurellidae, Lepetodriloidea, Scissurellidae, Anatomidae, Haliotis.

The Vetigastropoda are a major clade within the gastropods that contains the greater part of the paraphyletic 'Archaeogastropoda' of older classifications. Living members of the clade do not undergo a planktotrophic stage in the life cycle, and have a paucispiral protoconch (Bouchet et al. 2005). Many vetigastropods have a nacreous inner layer to the shell.
