The Grapsoidea is a diverse group of crabs including both terrestrial and aquatic taxa, with the highest diversity in the marine intertidal and supratidal zones.

Trichodactylidae

Belongs within: Heterotremata.

The Trichodactylidae are a family of crabs found in rivers and lakes of South America, with some species in Mexico and Nicaragua.

Characters (from Rodríguez 1992): Penis lodged in penial groove located across middle of 8th sternite. First male gonopod conical or flask-shaped, with distal portion armed with strong conical spines; gonopore large V-shaped, open caudally, or narrow, slit-like, open distally and flanked by one or two corneous lamellae. Second male gonopod of equal length or much longer than first gonopod, exceptionally reduced to short flagellum. Efferent openings large, restricted below only by endopod of first maxilliped. Endopod of first maxilliped with inner ('portunoid') lobe. Exopod of third maxilliped, including flagellum, always well developed. Antennae usually with basal article expanded into outer lobe which, together with occlusive tooth, closes orbit near yugal angle. Podomeres of walking legs flattened, without spines, with rows of long hairs on upper and lower margins of propodus and dactylus, propodus of fifth pair widened. Carapace subcircular or subhexagonal, moderately wider than long (cb/cl = 1.05-1.25) with 1-12 relatively large lateral teeth; cervical grooves absent.

The Menippidae are a family of marine crabs found in habitats ranging from coastal mangrove swamps to depths of over 800 m (Davie 2002).

Characters (from Davie 2002): Carapace xanthoid in shape, hexagonal to transversely oval or subrectangular; dorsal surface with regions moderately distinct or indistinct; granular or smooth, sometimes with distinct ridges; frontal margin more or less distinctly bi- or quadrilobed. Orbits typically open or sometimes closed; antennae typically positioned near orbits and antennules, but may be at some distance. Anterolateral margins typically with four lobes or broad teeth, but sometimes a variable number of spines or spinules, rarely entire; usually, but not always, clearly differentiated from posterolateral margins. Endostome with crests defining efferent branchial channels well developed, reaching anterior border of buccal cavity. Chelipeds more or less unequal; larger chela often with prominent cutting or crushing molariform tooth. Thoracic sternum narrow, never prominently widened. Male abdomen with all seven segments distinct, movable. Male genital openings coxal; female openings sternal. Male first gonopod stout, straight to weakly curved; second gonopod longer than or as long as first, with distinct long to very long flagellum.

The Parathelphusidae are a family of freshwater crabs found from southern Asia to New Guinea.

Characters (from Brandis & Sharma 2005): Second gonopod with spoon-like projection embracing the stem funnel-like, ending in groove formed by lateral invagination and projecting ventro- and dorsolateral margins; male abdomen very narrow, lateral margins sinuous. Eyes with small cornea.

Euphausiacea

Belongs within: Eumalacostraca.

The Euphausiacea, krill, are reasonably sized (generally some centimetres long) pelagic, shrimp-like crustaceans. They are best known for their role in the marine ecosystem as food for larger animals, due to their habit of forming large swarms.

Characters (from Ax 2000): Carapace fused to first eight thoracomeres, forming cephalothorax (lateral folds of carapace covering only upper parts of gills); telson with long narrow subapical appendages on posterior third.

Belongs within: Brachyura.

The Pinnotheridae, pea crabs, are small crabs found living as commensals of other invertebrates such as bivalves, ascidians, etc. The free-living males are generally much smaller than the females.

Characters (from Davie 2002): Carapace typically more or less round or transversely oval, often poorly calcified (especially in commensal females); anterolateral margins smooth or laterally toothed; front narrow; orbits and eyes very small; cornea sometimes obsolescent. Antennules and antennae usually very small. Interantennular septum reduced to a thin plate or absent. Buccal cavern broad, short, usually semicircular. Third maxilliped with merus often very large; ischium usually smally, sometimes completely lost or fused with merus; exopod small, more or less concealed. Male genital openings sternal, but originally coxal; female openings sternal. Male abdomen narrow.
