Platytrombidium

Platytrombidium fasciatum, copyright Walter Pfliegler.

Belongs within: Microtrombidiidae.

Platytrombidium is a genus of predatory mites known from adults only. The larva is as yet unidentified unless, as is quite possible, this genus is synonymous with the related Atractothrombium (Southcott 1994).

Characters (from Southcott 1994): Body medium-sized, generally of a red colour. Setae short, thick or broad, spindle-shaped or leaf like, not plumose, frequently set on papillae, externally covered with short, fine setules. Palpi strong, lateral side of the tibia with one or more strong spines. First leg tarsi generally long-oval, longer than tibia.

Microtrombidiidae

Subadult and egg of Willungella willungae, from Southcott (1994).

Belongs within: Parasitengonina.
Contains: Enemothrombium, Eutrombidium, Microtrombidium, Platytrombidium, Camerotrombidium, Manriquia.

The Microtrombidiidae are a cosmopolitan group of predatory mites with the palptibia of adults bearing multiple spinose setae alongside the terminal claw, and with larvae parasitic on Diptera. A large plate is present posteriorly on the idionotum in members of the subfamily Eutrombidiinae but absent in Microtrombidiinae (Walter et al. 2009).

Characters (from Southcott 1994): Adults and deutonymphs of small to moderate size, generally with eyes, if present, sessile. Dorsum of idiosoma with or without pygosomal scutum. Crista with one sensillary area, with two sensillary setae. Anterior end of crista ending in broadened area, generally somewhat sclerotized, usually bearing several setulose setae. Palpal tibia with odontus (‘claw’), paradont (‘accessory claw’), and various thickened spiniform setae (‘spinisetae’), some formed into a ctenidium, or more than one ctenidia. Larva with two or more median dorsal idiosomal scuta; two eyes on each side. Anterior dorsal scutum with pair of sensillary setae. Anterior dorsal scutum covering anterior part of idiosoma, may be deflexed; its two anteriormost scutal setae (AM scutalae) widely separated. Leg segmental pattern 6, 6, 6. Coxal setal pattern 2, 2, 1 or 2, 1, 1. Tarsal claws may be reduced, those of tarsus III may be modified (‘deformed’) for jumping (saltatory modification).

Trombellidae

Trombella lusitanica, from Walter et al. (2009).

Belongs within: Parasitengonina.

The Trombellidae are a group of large, often colourful mites found in forest litter whose larvae are parasitic on insects. Members of the subfamilies Spelaeothrombiinae and Moyanella gigax are known from South America; the subfamily Trombellinae is more widespread (Walter et al. 2009).

Characters (from Walter et al. 2009): Adults with idionotum entirely surrounded by peripheral sclerotised band, or bearing 2-16 circular depressions with peripheral sclerotised bands, or with idionotal borne on raised papillae but lacking basal sclerites. Larvae with idionotum bearing unpaired prodorsal sclerite but lacking scutellum, setae c1 located on paired platelets; coxal plates smooth; urstigmata present between coxal plates I-II; femur I bearing 5-6 branched setae; femora II-III bearing multiple solenidia θ; pretarsus with empodium.

Trombiculidae

Larvae of Pentagonella acuscutellaris on back of great snipe Gallinago media, from Mąkol & Korniluk (2017).

Belongs within: Parasitengonina.
Contains: Guntheria, Trombicula, Neotrombicula, Leptotrombidium, Eutrombicula, Euschongastia.

The Trombiculidae are a family of predatory mites whose larvae, known as chiggers, are mostly ectoparasitic on vertebrates. Bites from chiggers induce formation of a characteristic feeding tube, the stylostome, and can cause intensely itchy lesions that may become infected. On humans, chiggers most commonly attach themselves in locations constricted by clothing, such as the armpits, ankles or belt line (Gould 1956). Adults, where known, are often predators of insect eggs (Walter et al. 2009).

Trombiculids have been divided between the subfamilies Trombiculinae and Gahrliepiinae. In larvae of Trombiculinae, the prodorsal scutum usually possesses an anteromedian seta and the basifemora and telofemora of the legs are usually distinct; in Gahrliepiinae, the scutum lacks an anteromedian seta and the basifemur and telofemur are fused in the mid and hind legs. Within Trombiculinae, Thor (1936) established the genus Pentagonella for a group of species with a distinctly pentagonal prodorsal scutum. Larvae of Neoschoengastia have distally expanded sensillae and the scutum is partially submerged beneath the dorsal cuticular striations (Gould 1956).

Characters (from Walter et al. 2009): Adults with prodorsal plate bearing no or one vi seta anteriorly; palpfemur bearing about same number of setae as genu, palptibia bearing group of lateral spinose setae in tandem; pregenital tubercle absent. Larvae with prodorsal plate bearing no or one vi seta; scutellum absent, setae c1 located on paired platelets; urstigmata present between coxal plates I and II; anal plate absent; genu II bearing three barbed setae; pretarsi I and II each bearing paired claws and claw-like empodium.
