Eremaeoidea

The Eremaeoidea are a group of oribatid mites characterised by the presence in nymphs of an apodemato-acetabular tracheal system. The largest family within the Eremaeoidea is the Eremaeidae, members of of which often exhibit anal neotrichy with up to nine pairs of anal setae (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). The genus Proteremaeus is exceptional in only having two pairs of anal setae, together with three pairs of adanal setae. Members of the European genus Tricheremaeus also have a higher number of setae on the notogaster than other species (more than eleven pairs), with the setae being particularly long.

Characters (from Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009): Adult prodorsum usually with costulae. Genal notch absent. Dorsophragmata and pleurophragmata absent. Pedotecta I–II present; discidium and circumpedal carina absent. Notogastral setation 7–11 pairs, or neotrichous. Notogastral cerotegument usually with large tubercles (globules). Palpal eupathidium acm separate from recumbent solenidion. Axillary saccule of the subcapitulum occasionally present. Epimere II with 1–3 pairs of setae. Anal and/or adanal neotrichy present or absent. Tarsi I–IV ofen with porose areas present ventrally; tarsus I with 2–3 solenidia; legs IV may be modified for jumping. Larva unideficient. Nymphs with platytracheae or brachytracheae; eupheredermous; opisthonotal setation quadrideficient, quinquedeficient, or neotrichous. Preanal organ hollowed as caecum.

The Poronoticae are a group of oribatid mites possessing an octotaxic system, a series of glandular openings (most typically four pairs) on the notogaster in the form of porose areas or saccules. Monophyly of the group is uncertain; a number of taxa lacking the octotaxic system are otherwise similar in morphology to clearly poronotic species and it is probable that the octotaxic system has evolved more than once and/or been lost in some subgroups.

Members of the Poronoticae include the Achipterioidea, known from soil, litter, mosses and liverworts. Members of the Achipteriidae have characteristic spiral internal thickenings in the bothridium and a distinct long, thin, dorsally concave genu in leg IV (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). The Epactozetidae are a Neotropical family with large, auriculate pteromorphs and foveate patterning on the notogaster (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009).

Austrachipteria

Austrachipteria is a genus of oribatid mites that is most diverse in Australasia though a single species A. pulla is known from Japan (Subías 2004).

Characters (from Balogh & Balogh 1992): Lamellae synlamellate; pteromorphae immovable; octotaxic system sacculonotic, four pairs of sacculi; ten pairs of notograstral setae present, setae lm and lp originating almost in same longitudinal row as setae c2, h1 and h3; six pairs of genital setae present, one pair of aggenital setae, two pairs of anal setae; three pairs of adanal setae; legs tridactyle.

Ameronothroidea

The Ameronothroidea are a group of mostly semi-aquatic oribatid mites, inhabiting locations such as ephemeral rock pools or intertidal littoral zones. Gas exchange may be facilitated during immersion by a cerotegumental plastron and/or taenidia and tecta in the pleural region (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). Some species of Ameronothridae are noteworthy for being found in extreme environments in the Arctic or Antarctic (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). Members of the genera Antarcticola and Pseudantarcticola have fewer setae on the notogaster than other genera of Ameronothridae, with only ten or eleven pairs versus the twelve or more pairs of the latter (Balogh & Balogh 1992).

Characters (from Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009): Adults with integument often weakly sclerotised and easily distorted. Prodorsum with or without lamellae, adjacent medially or separated, and lamellar cusps. Tutorium and translamella present or absent. Gena1 notch absent. Bothridial seta normally developed or extremely small, or absent. Chelicerae rhelate-dentate; palpal eupathidium acm separate from solenidion; subcapitular mentum without tectum. Axillary saccule of subcapitulum absent. Dorsophragmata and pleurophragmata present or absent. Discidium present or absent, custodium absent. Pedotectum I large, extending to base of bothridium, subdivided, or absent. Pedotectum II present or absent. With or without tecta laterally to maintain plastron around sejugal region and acetabulum III. Coxisternal setation various (3-1-3-2, 3-1-2-2, 3-1-3-2, 2-1-2-3, or 1-1-1-1). Genital setation 3, 5, or 6 pairs. Ovipositor and spermatopositor with 11-12 setae. Notogaster overhanging ventral plate. Lenticulus present or absent. Immatures apheredermous, plicate, opisthonotum often smooth and convex centrodorsally; unideficient or bideficient. Prodorsal, adanal, and latero-hysterosomal porose regions (or their saccule homologues) present or absent. Seta d variably present on tibiae and genua when respective solenidion is present.

The Oppiellinae are a group of oppioid oribatid mites with lamellar costulae on the prodorsum and a crista on the notogaster. Members include the cosmopolitan genus Oppiella, with characteristic humeral processes on the notogaster. These processes are absent in the genus Lauroppia, found in most parts of the world except the Ethiopian and Antarctic regions.

Characters (from Balogh & Balogh 1992): Lamellar costulae present, shorter than half length of prodorsum. Crista present. Setae c2 well developed. Setae ad1 in postanal position. Legs monodactyle.

The Oppioidea are a diverse group of oribatid mites with moniliform legs and lacking true lamellae on the prodorsum, generally recognised as the largest oribatid superfamily. Members of the Oppioidea include the Oppiidae, a diverse family of over 1000 species that mostly feed on fungi. Oppiids divided between several subfamilies, one of which was established for the Spanish species Paternoppia andalusicabulensis as recently as 2000 (Subías 2004). Of these subfamilies, the Antilloppiinae are distinctive in having the genital and anal plates particularly large, occupying almost the entire length of the ventral plate. The Pulchroppiinae have long third and fourth epimeres that reach far posteriad of the genital plates, and lack the fourth apodemata (Balogh & Balogh 1992).

The Suctobelbidae have slender, elongate chelicerae. The genera Suctobelbila and Suctobelbiloides are distinctive in the notogaster having very short setae borne on large rounded tubercles; other genera lack such tubercles and the setae are usually longer. The Holarctic genus Rhinosuctobelba has a particularly elongate rostrum, with a single pair of large lateral teeth. Geniculate rostral setae are found in the genera Novosuctobelba, Fenestrobelba and Suctobelbella (Balogh & Balogh 1992).

Other families include the Autognetidae, characterised by a deep medial incision on the rostrum and a large dorsodistal tubercle on tibia I overhanging the tarsus. The Granuloppiidae are a pantropical group characterised by the presence of costulae on the prodorsum together with the absence of apodemata IV. The Teratoppiidae have the first two pairs of tibiae expanded laterally, with apophyses (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009).

Posterior notogastral tectum usually absent; humeral apophysis present or absent. Circumpedal carina, custodium and discidium absent. Pedotectum I usually present, small, scale-like; pedotectum II absent. Epimera III and IV fused; coxisternal setation 3-1-3-3, or epimera III and IV neotrichous; 4–7 pairs of genital setae; ventral neotrichy absent. Preanal organ without caecum. Legs moniliform. Trochanter III with 1–2 setae; tarsus II with 2 solenidia; proral setae of tarsi II–IV short and spinelike; pretarsi monodactylous. Immatures apheredermous, unideficient, or nymphs bideficient.
