Helogale, the dwarf mongooses, is a genus of small, diurnal, social mongooses with a grizzled brown pelage found in eastern and southern Africa.

Belongs within: Pholidotamorpha.

The Pholidota (pangolins) are toothless, insectivorous mammals known from Africa and Asia. Modern species are characterised by a covering of overlapping keratinous scales, and have powerful forelimbs adapted for digging.

Contains: Arctocyonidae, Pantodonta, Periptychidae, Pholidotamorpha, Didelphodontinae, Creodonta, Mesonychia, Carnivoramorpha.

The Ferae are a clade of mammals supported by molecular data uniting the modern Carnivora with the Pholidota (pangolins). A phylogenetic analysis of Palaeocene mammals by Halliday et al. (2017) identified a number of potential fossil members of this clade when results were constrained to correlate with modern molecular analyses but it remains to be seen whether these associations will be supported by future analyses.

The Hyaenidae, hyaenas, are cursorial carnivores known from Africa and Eurasia, with fossil representatives in North America. Hyaenas have relatively short bodies with conspicuously down-sloping backs, and are conspicuously marked with stripes or spots.

The Arctocyonidae are a group of probably omnivorous mammals known from the Palaeocene and early Eocene of Europe and North America. They are generalised in morphology, with more or less tritubercular teeth, simple premolars, and moderately long limbs with paraxonic feet and claw-like unguals.

Musteloidea

Belongs within: Carnivora.
Contains: Conepatus, Procyonidae, Mustelidae.

The Musteloidea is a clade of mostly small-bodied carnivorans, including the weasels, raccoons and related taxa. Previously divided between the families Procyonidae and Mustelidae, more recent phylogenetic analyses have agreed in placing the skunks (Mephitidae) and red panda Ailurus fulgens outside the clade formed by the former two taxa. The skunks are omnivorous animals native to North and South America, commonly with contrasting black and white colour patterns and with defensive anal scent glands that produce a noxious spray.

Synapomorphies (from Flynn et al. 1988): Auditory bulla with caudal ectotympanic ventrally and posteriorly expanded, with relative shortening of carotid canal (reversed in some sublineages); alisphenoid canal absent; third upper and lower molars both absent.

Creodonta

The Creodonta is a Palaeocene to Miocene group of carnivorous mammals, though the monophyly of the group is uncertain. Of the two constituent families, the Oxyaenidae probably originated in North America and remained most diverse there, whereas the Hyaenodontidae were diverse in both Eurasia and North America and were suggested by Gheerbrant et al. (2006) to have originated in Africa.

Characters (from Gunnell 1998): Small brains placed low in skull; large sagittal crest and broad temporal fossae in most taxa; auditory bullae primitively unossified; mastoid processes normally enlarged and broad; postorbital constriction distinct, separating skull into well-defined splanchnocranium and neurocranium. Upper and lower canines enlarged and pointed; lateral incisors large, medial incisors small in most species; premolars usually small and pointed; P4/p4 often more complex, even submolariform; lower molars with high trigonids and long, relatively narrow talonids; trigonids dominated by high, well-developed protoconid, with paraconid and metaconid (if present) lower, but often distinct; more derived forms with open trigonids forming long, tall cutting blades; metaconid primitively same size or smaller than paraconid, often completely lost; talonids reduced or lost in derived species; upper molars (and P4) with extended postmetacristae forming elongate cutting surfaces. Generalised postcranial skeleton; limbs mesaxonic, ranging from plantigrade to digitigrade; terminal phalanges are fissured claws; unfused scaphoid, lunate and centrale; astragalar trochlea smooth to grooved; astragalar head flattened and often obliquely angled from body; femur with distinct third trochanter; fumerus with shallow olecranon fossa and deep supratrochlear fossa.

Proviverrinae

Belongs within: Creodonta.

The Proviverrinae are a generalised group of creodonts that are probably paraphyletic with regard to other more derived hyaenodontids. Two distinct groups have been identified within the proviverrines that may represent distinct lineages: one, including the relatives of Proviverra, is characterised by molars with a tricuspid talonid bearing a broad postfossid, and a two-rooted P/1, whereas the other, including the relatives of Prototomus has molars with a reduced entoconid and elongated postfossid, and a primitively single-rooted P/1 (Gheerbrant et al. 2006).

Characters (from Gunnell 1998): M1-3 tritubercular; m1-3 tuberculo-sectorial; m1-3 usually with distinct metaconids and moderate shearing specialisations; premolars elongate, often laterally compressed; feet and limbs may be specialised for climbing or cursoriality.

Hyaenodontinae

Belongs within: Creodonta.

The Hyaenodontinae are a group of carnivorous, often cursorial mammals known from the Eocene to the Oligocene. They varied widely in size, with the smallest species little larger than a rat whereas Megistotherium osteothlastes of the Miocene of Libya was among the largest land carnivores known.

Characters (from Polly 1996): Hyaenodontids without metaconid, with narrow distal humerus, with nuchal crest extending to the mastoid process, with robust bridge over the foramen stylomastoid primitivum, without bony ridge dividing the posterior petrosal sinus from the foramen stylomastoid primitivum, with inflated posterior petrosal sinus, and with horse-shoe shaped subarcuate fossa.

The Felidae, cats, are a family of hypercarnivorous carnivorans native to all continents except Australia and Antarctica. Most cats are relatively solitary, with some notable exceptions (such as the lion Panthera leo). Living cats are all included in the subfamily Felinae; the subfamily Machairodontinae includes the extinct sabre-toothed cats. The Felinae are generally divided between the 'big cats' and 'small cats'; the former are all classified in the genus Panthera except the clouded leopards Neofelis, heavily built, arboreal cats found in south-east Asia. The 'small' cats, mostly classified in the past into a single genus Felis, are now usually divided between several genera. Pardofelis species are found in forests of south-east Asia; the marbled cat P. marmorata is arboreal in habits, finding most of its prey in the forest canopy. The cheetah Acinonyx jubatus is a large, lanky, highly cursorial cat found historically over much of Africa and southern Asia, though its range has become greatly contracted outside southern African and it is nearly extinct in Asia.

Synapomorphies (from Flynn et al. 1988): Cheek teeth reduced to P3-2/2, M1/1; small chisel-like incisors arranged in straight transverse line; crushing function of molars entirely lost, M1 reduced to small transverse bar, M1 lacking talonid and metaconid; skull with short rostrum and facial area and short inflated braincase; orbits large, vision stereoscopic; tongue covered with numerous posteriorly-directed horny papillae.
