Basalhaplogynae

Belongs within: Araneida.
Contains: Scytodoidea, Pholcidae, Segestriidae, Dysderidae, Orsolobidae, Oonopidae.

The Basalhaplogynae are a clade of spiders in which the chelicerae are fused at the base and provided with a lamina; members of the clade also have the tegulum and subtegulum fused and the spinnerets lack tartipores (Jocqué & Dippenaar-Schoeman 2007).

Scytodidae

Belongs within: Scytodoidea.

The Scytodidae, spitting spiders, are a cosmopolitan (mostly tropical) group of spiders that capture prey by spraying it with gluey silk (Jocqué & Dippenaar-Schoeman 2007). The species Dictis striatipes, Scytodes longipes and S. thoracica have become widely introduced outside their native ranges in association with humans.

Characters (from Jocqué & Dippenaar-Schoeman 2007): Small to medium-sized; three tarsal claws; ecribeelate; haplogyne; six eyes in three diads; thoracic region domed, containing prosomal glands producing gluey silk; legs long and slender; body decorated with symmetrical dark pattern.

Orsolobidae

Belongs within: Basalhaplogynae.

The Orsolobidae are a group of ground-hunting spiders found in the Southern Hemisphere. They are distinguished by presence of biserially dentate claws on the tarsi in association with ventral tufts of spatulate setae. Females have a claw at the end of the palp (Jocqué & Dippenaar-Schoeman 2007).

Characters (from Jocqué & Dippenaar-Schoeman 2007): Small; six eyes present with four eyes in anterior row, and posterior lateral eyes behind anterior lateral eyes; legs with two tarsal claws, which are biserially dentate with an onychium and spatulate claw tufts; tarsal organ elevated; posterior tracheae anteriorly positioned; ecribellate; haplogyne.

Oonopidae

Belongs within: Basalhaplogynae.

The Oonopidae, goblin spiders, are a family of very small ground-hunting spiders, most diverse in tropical regions. Their six eyes (if present) are grouped close together with the anterior eyes large. In members of the subfamily Gamasomorphinae, the abdomen is covered by hardened dorsal and ventral scuta (Jocqué & Dippenaar-Schoeman 2007).

Characters (from Jocqué & Dipppenaar-Schoeman 2007): Very small; six eyes present, grouped close together, or eyes absent; legs with two claws, biserially dentate on an onychium; abdomen often with dorsal and ventral scuta; posterior tracheae anteriorly positioned; ecribellate; haplogyne, female genitalia a sclerotised slit composed of two distinct elements associated with both anterior and posterior walls of bursa.

Segestriidae

Belongs within: Basalhaplogynae.

The Segestriidae are a cosmopolitan group of spiders that construct tubular retreats from the mouth of which extend trip-lines. They have a fairly elongate body form, with the carapace and abdomen each longer than wide. The third pair of legs is held directed forwards alongside the first two pairs, with only the fourth pair directed rearwards (Jocqué & Dippenaar-Schoeman 2007).

Characters (from Jocqué & Dippenaar-Schoeman 2007): Medium-sized; six eyes present in two rows, with lateral eyes contiguous, posterior median eyes closely grouped; legs with three tarsal claws; third pair of legs directed forwards; posterior tracheal spiracles far forward, just behind booklung slits; ecribellate; haplogyne; female palpal claw turned inwards over almost 90°.

Dysderidae

Belongs within: Basalhaplogynae.

The Dysderidae is a western Palaearctic family of free-living spiders with large chelicerae, some of which have a predilection for hunting woodlice. One such species, the slater spider Dysdera crocata, has a global distribution in association with humans. Dysderids are free-wandering hunters at night, spending daylight hours in a silken retreat (Jocqué & Dippenaar-Schoeman 2007).

Characters (from Jocqué & Dippenaar-Schoeman 2007): Medium-sized; six eyes present in compact group near clypeal edge; chelicerae and fangs well-developed; sternum joined to carapace by intercoxal sclerites; legs with two or three tarsal claws; distinct pair of tracheal spiracles posterior to booklung slits; ecribellate; haplogyne.
