Triphoroidea

Seila adamsi, copyright Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History.

Belongs within: Littorinina.
Contains: Aliptinae, Cerithiopsis, Notosinister, Triphorinae.

The Triphoroidea are a group of small, high-spired marine gastropods that are specialist predators of sponges, feeding by means of an elongated proboscis. Teleoconch sculpture is dominated by spiral cords, often with axial costae forming nodules at their intersections. Members of the family Triphoridae are most commonly sinistral whereas other families are dextral. Newtoniellidae are most commonly found in deep waters whereas Cerithiopsidae and Triphoridae are most diverse on the continental shelf.

Littorininae

Common periwinkle Littorina littorea, copyright Anita Gould.

Belongs within: Littorinoidea.

The Littorininae are a group of periwinkles found in the littoral fringe, characterised by the production of dimorphic spermatozoa including paraspermatic nurse cells, and egg capsules via a capsule gland (Reid 1989).
