Scutum with or without notauli. Episternal sulcus present, omaulus and subomaulus rarely present. Female foreleg without a tarsal rake; hind femur simple apically; mid coxae widely separated to contiguous, arolia moderate to large, equal on all legs; male fore coxa and trochanter unmodified. Propodeum short to long; enclosure often undefined; propodeal sternite sometimes present. One, two, or three submarginal cells, cell II petiolate when three are present; two recurrent veins except one in wings with only one submarginal cell, end point of veins variable; marginal cell often acuminate. Jugal lobe small, less than half length of anal area; hamuli usually divided into two groups. Gaster sessile or petiolate; pygidial plate usually not defined. Volsella present; gonostyle simple or bifurcate apically.

Sericophorus

Sericophorus sp., copyright Jean and Fred Hort.

Belongs within: Crabronidae.

Sericophorus, policemen flies, is an Australian genus of bee-like, ground-nesting wasps that stock their nests with muscoid flies (Bohart & Menke 1976). Historically, the genus has been divided between the subgenera Sericophorus and Zoyphidium based on whether the marginal cell of the fore wing is narrowly truncate or acuminate, respectively, but Lomholdt & Pulawski (2010) did not regard this distinction as significant.

Characters (from Lomholdt & Pulawski 2010): Occipital carina usually reaching hypostomal carina; hind ocelli round, non-modified; propodeal spiracle usually elongate, extending nearly to propodeal foremargin; posterior propodeal surface bearing well defined median carina on approximately ventral third; fore wing usually with three submarginal cells (occasionally two), second submarginal cell usually markedly narrowing anteriorly (except when secondarily fused with third submarginal cell); hind femur simply attenuate; female with setose pygidial plate; male with only ten flagellomeres, volsella absent.

Pison (Pison)

Pison spinolae, from Insects of Tasmania.

Belongs within: Trypoxylini.

The type subgenus of the genus Pison is a cosmopolitan group of wasps nesting in cells constructed in hollows in plant stems or beetle burrows, or in mud cells in sheltered locations. Nests are provisioned with spiders (Bohart & Menke 1976).

Characters (from Bohart & Menke 1976): Eyes bare. Mandible entire. Gaster sessile, not pedunculate, segment I bell-shaped in dorsal view , width of segment I much more than two-thirds greatest width of II and usually subequal to II. Fore wing with two or three submarginal cells.

Trypoxylon cf. scutatum, copyright Hectonichus.

Belongs within: Trypoxylini.

The type subgenus of the genus Trypoxylon is a cosmopolitan group of slender-bodied wasps, species of which seem to take a variety of prey species (Bohart & Menke 1976).

Characters (from Bohart & Menke 1976): Transverse (may be angulate) interantennal carina present, or if not, then frons just above or between sockets usually strongly or abruptly elevated; frontal carina weak or strong, often bifurcating above, the arms sometimes rejoining to enclose a shield-shaped area on frons; dorsal margin of petiole socket convex, narrowly bandlike or merely sharp edged, often with a backward projecting lamella; omaulus absent: propodeal side often limited dorsally by a carina or foveate sulcus between spiracle and petiole socket; propodeal sternite often present; two groups of hind wing hamuli usually separated by more than length of apical row. Male genitalia with gonostyle usually divided apically into dorsal and ventral lobe ("squama"); sternum VIII variable (apical processes short if present).
