Belongs within: Trigynaspida.

The Fedrizzioidea are a group of tropical mites most commonly found in association with passalid beetles (Lindquist et al. 2009).

Characters (from Lindquist et al. 2009): Holodorsal shield bearing numerous minute setae. Mesogynal and latigynal shields well developed or reduced and withdrawn under ventral plate. Sternal setae 1 on tetartosternum, sternal shield with three pairs of setae. Sternogynum entire, hinged along posterior margin of sternal shield and covering anterior genital opening. Endopodal shields fused to ventral plate (fused ventral, peritrematic, exopodal, and marginal elements) or free; pedofossae often present. Ventrianal shield obtriangular, meeting or partially fused to ventral plate. Palptibia and tarsus distinct, unfused; chelicerae with short digits and dense, mop-like mass of filamentous and ribbonlike excrescences; corniculi broad, membranous.

Celaenopsoidea

The Celaenopsoidea are a diverse group of mites associated with various arthropods and reptiles. In most families, the dorsum of the deutonymph bears separate podonotal, mesonotal and pygidial shields but the adult has a single holodorsal shield. However, the separate shields are retained to maturity in the Neotropical millipede-associated Neotenogynium malkini. Species of the family Diplogyniidae, which are associated as adults with beetles or snakes, have the anal opening on the large ventral plate and the latigynal plates freely hinged to the ventral plate. Species of Costacarus and Triplogyniidae also have free latigynals but the anal opening is on a separate small plate (Lindquist et al. 2009).

Characters (from Lindquist et al. 2009): Deutonymph with separate podonotal, mesonotal, and pygidial shields; adults usually with holodorsal shield bearing an unpaired median seta at its anterior margin (adults of Neotenogynium retain free shields as in deutonymph). Mesogynal shield small, triangular, and free or amalgamated with latiglynal and/or ventral elements; latigynal shields free or fused to ventral plate; vaginal sclerites well developed. Sternal shield bearing 3-4 setae; free metasternal shield bearing st4 and stp3 often present. Venter covered by single extensive plate, or plate flanked by free lateral and/or anal shields. Palptibia and tarsus distinct, unfused; palpgenu with 5-7 setae; chelicerae with robust, dentate digits, movable digit with large proximal tooth and dendritic or brushlike excrescences. Male genital opening on anterior margin of sternal shield.

Trigynaspida

The Trigynaspida are a group of large mesostigmatan mites that are primarily associated with arthropods or reptiles, either as commensals or parasites. They are divided between two major lineages with the Antennophorina being generally more heavily sclerotised with fully separate tritosternal laciniae and no claws on the first legs. The Cercomegistoidea tend to be less sclerotised with the tritosternal laciniae usually fused for more than half their length while claws may be present on the first legs. Within the Cercomegistoidea, members of the family Cercomegistidae are associated with arthropods whereas other families are free-living predators in soil (Lindquist et al. 2009).

Characters (from Lindquist et al. 2009): Movable cheliceral digit with medial or terminal dendritic, brushlike, or filamentous ventral excrescences. Oviporus usually covered by two latigynal and one mesogynal shields that may be variously coalesced or reduced; median element (mesogynal shield) nude, subtriangular by often reduced of insensibly fused to other elements; latigynal shields each with one to many setae, free or fused posteriorly to ventral elements and/or medially to each other. Femur IV with 4-11 setae. Tarsus IV usually with setae av4 and pv4 present in adults and deutonymphs (usually on free intercalary sclerite in adult).
