Limnichidae

Limnichus australis, from Insects of Tasmania.

Belongs within: Byrrhoidea.

The Limnichidae are a group of very small beetles often found in riparian habitats (Lawrence & Britton 1991).

Characters (from Lawrence & Britton 1991): Very small, oval and moderately convex beetles, clothed with decumbent, erect or occasionally minute and pruinose vestiture. Antennae eleven-segmented with three- or four-segmented club, usually slender; frontoclypeal suture present; body with ventral cavities into which legs can be folded; prosternum elongate, extending well in front of coxae; fore coxae transverse, trochantins exposed, coxal cavities externally and internally open; mid coxal cavities widely separated, laterally open; transverse metasternal suture usually present; tarsi usually five-segmented, rarely four-segmented; abdomen with five visible ventrites, three to five connate. Larvae cylindrical, maxillolabial complex consolidated, so cardines are contiguous, maxillary articulating areas absent, postmentum joined to stipites for most of its length.

Polycestinae

Astraeus fraterculus, copyright Western Australian Museum.

Belongs within: Buprestidae.
Contains: Acmaeodera, Polycesta.

The Polycestinae are a group of jewel beetles that often have strongly punctured and/or carinate elytra and a sternal cavity for reception of the prosternal process often formed entirely from the mesosternum. The sternal cavity is partially formed by the metasternum in the Australasian genus Astraeus, members of which are generally strongly convex.

Agrilinae

Ethon latipennis, from Brisbane Insects.

Belongs within: Buprestidae.
Contains: Agrilus, Aphanisticus, Cisseis.

The Agrilinae are a group of jewel beetles characterised by a sternal cavity (receiving the prosternal process) formed in more or less equal parts by the mesosternum and metasternum. Members of the tribes Aphanisticini and Tracheini have mesocoxae more widely separated than the procoxae and legs with relatively short tarsi whereas Agrilini and Coraebini have procoxae and mesocoxae more or less equidistant and relatively long tarsi.

Buprestinae

Western cedar borer Trachykele blondeli, copyright Kildale.

Belongs within: Buprestidae.
Contains: Chrysobothris, Buprestis, Bubastini, Dicercini, Anthaxia, Neocuris, Melanophilini, Temognatha, Calodema, Stigmodera, Curis.

The Buprestinae are a group of jewel beetles characterised by the possession of antennae with arrays of pores concentrated in well defined, usually apical depressions on the antennal segments. In members of the tribes Anthaxiini, Melanophilini and Maoraxia, the metepimeron is at least partially covered by a broad anterolateral projection of the abdomen. The metepimeron is uncovered in Buprestini, Bubastini and Dicercini (Bellamy & Williams 1985).
