Oribatulidae

Lucoppia burrowsi, copyright Charley Eiseman.

Belongs within: Oripodoidea.
Contains: Phauloppia, Oribatula (Oribatula), Oribatula (Zygoribatula), Paraphauloppia (Paraphauloppia), Maculobates, Liebstadia, Totobates.

The Oribatulidae are a diverse group of oribatid mites with reduced pteromorphs. The composition of the family has been subject to some fluidity. Lee (1991) recognised a number of the taxa previously included in the Oribatulidae as a separate family, Crassoribatulidae, on the basis of leg chaetotaxy (specifically the presence in Oribatulidae sensu stricto of seta v2 on femur II), but this division has not been accepted by all subsequent authors. Indeed, Subías (2004) treated some genera treated by Lee as belonging to separate families as synonymous. Also of uncertain position are the Liebstadiinae which possess small but immovable pteromorphs.

Characters (from Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009): Length 250-900 µm. Prodorsum curving over gnathosoma, covering chelicerae dorsally; rostrum rounded. Bothridium inserted anterior to notogastral margin. Prolamella, sublamella, tutorium and pleural carinae absent. Chelicerae with two setae. Distal eupathidia on palptarsus not in same plane. Pteromorphs or humeral projections absent. Posterior notogastral tectum absent. Sternal furrow absent. Adanal setation three pairs. Marginoventral porose areas present. Tarsus I without dorsal porose area.

Oripodidae

Oripoda pinicola, from here.

Belongs within: Oripodoidea.

The Oripodidae are a group of oribatid mites with strongly truncate, usually three-clawed tarsi (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). They exhibit a reduction in the number of genito-anal setae with most species having three or fewer pairs of genital setae (Balogh & Balogh 1992a).

Characters (from Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009): Length 250-550 µm. Prodorsum not curved over gnathosoma, rostral tectum not completely covering chelicerae dorsally. Bothridium inserted lateroposteriorly, posterior to level of anterior notogastral margin. Octotaxic system with four pairs of saccules. Posterior notogastral tectum absent. 1-3 pairs of genital setae. Tarsi, particularly tarsus I, strongly truncate; pretarsi tridactylous.

Cheyletoidea

Dog follicle mite Demodex canis, copyright Kalumet.

Belongs within: Eleutherengonides.
Contains: Cheyletidae, Myobiidae.

The Cheyletoidea are a group of mites that are commonly parasitic on vertebrates. Representatives include the vermiform Demodicidae which inhabit the hair follicles of mammals, feeding on epithelial and sebaceous gland cells (Walter et al. 2009).

See also: Your little friends that are with you always.

Characters (from Walter et al. 2009): Soft bodied but often with weak dorsal shields. Gnathosoma well defined, composed of cheliceral stylophore either free from subcapitulum or fused into gnathosomatic capsule; movable cheliceral digits styliform, needle-like, retractile, approximate terminally; palpi variously developed, often reduced with fused tibiotarsus and femorogenu, or telescoped, sometimes large and armed with a distinctive tibial claw; postcheliceral stigmata and peritremes present in free-living and some parasitic forms but absent in many parasites; with present, peritremes at base of chelicerae or on dorsal surface of gnathosomatic capsule, dorsal cheliceral seta rd absent in larva. Prodorsum lacking anteromedian naso, typically with four pairs of setae, none inserted in bothridia; eyes present or absent. Opisthosoma with 0 to many setae dorsally and laterally, with or without postlarval setal additions or hypertrichy dorsally; cupules (lyrifissures) absent; elements of opisthosomatic segments AD absent. Larval urstigma and postlarval genital papilla absent. Claws always present on tarsi II, and usually on tarsi III-IV unless legs are reduced or absent, claws present or absent on tarsus I; empodia present or absent, often with tenent hairs; genua and tibiae of all legs with a maximum of three setae; solenidion of genu I present or absent. Female genital opening ventral, terminal or dorsal, free from or fused to anal opening; oviporus adjacent to or fused with genital opening. Male with terminal or dorsal genito-anal opening. Usually four active postembryonic instars including larva, two nymphal instars, and adult. Developmental stases may be apodous, or postlarval stases may be hexapod.

Circumdehiscentiae

Dorsum and venter of Niphocepheus nivalis delamarei, from Balogh & Balogh (1992 vol. 2).

Belongs within: Desmonomata.
Contains: Microzetidae, Polypterozetoidea, Oppiidae, Autognetidae, Machuellidae, Quadroppiidae, Sternoppia, Granuloppiidae, Teratoppiidae, Suctobelbidae, Platyameridae, Banksinoma, Machadobelba, Damaeidae, Amerobelbidae, Damaeolidae, Eremobelba, Ameridae, Ctenobelba, Eremulidae, Heterobelbidae, Basilobelbidae, Rhynchoribatidae, Eremaeozetoidea, Tenuialidae, Astegistidae, Gustavia, Oribatellidae, Neoliodidae, Hermanniellidae, Plasmobatidae, Zetorchestidae, Liacaridae, Eremaeidae, Arceremaeidae, Peloppiidae, Cepheidae, Eutegaeidae, Microtegeidae, Anderemaeidae, Cymbaeremaeidae, Carabodidae, Nippobodidae, Otocepheidae, Dampfiellidae, Oripodoidea, Plateremaeidae, Licnodamaeidae, Pheroliodidae, Gymnodamaeidae, Pedrocortesellidae, Xenillidae, Hydrozetes, Limnozetidae, Austrachipteria, Achipterioidea, Tectocepheidae, Licneremaeoidea, Scapheremaeus, Ameronothridae, Fortuyniidae, Selenoribatidae, Tegeocranellus, Galumnidae, Galumnellidae, Ceratozetoidea, Phenopelopidae.

The Circumdehiscentiae, or 'higher oribatid mites' (also known as Brachypylina), are a major clade within the oribatids. They are characterised by having the genital and anal plates usually well separated on the ventral plate, and by having the tibiae and genua of the legs differing from each other in length and shape (Balogh & Balogh 1992). Relationships within the Circumdehiscentiae are, as yet, poorly understood. A number of authors have divided them between the Pycnonoticae and Poronoticae, based primarily on the presence (Poronoticae) or absence (Pycnonoticae) of the octotaxic system, a series of glandular openings on the notogaster. Alternatively, Pycnonoticae has been labelled as Apterogastrina and Poronoticae as Pterogastrina, in reference to the absence or presence, respectively, of pteromorphs, lateral extensions of the notogaster that may or may not be movable. However, the Pycnonoticae are undoubtedly paraphyletic, while the Poronoticae may possibly be polyphyletic. Conversely, characters of the nymphs have been considered significant in classification, such as whether they retain scalps (exuviae of previous instars) for protection (scalps are retained in 'Eupheredermata', lost in 'Apheredermata'), and whether the nymphs have a plicate (wrinkled) integument. However, immature Circumdehiscentiae are often very different in appearance from their adults, and the nymphs for many species remain undescribed. Molecular phylogenies of Circumdehiscentiae published to date have only included a small subsection of brachypyline diversity, with many major groups as yet unrepresented.

Eupheredermous taxa include the Plasmobatidae, Neoliodidae, Plateremaeoidea, Damaeidae, Cepheoidea, Polypterozetoidea, Microzetidae and most Ameroidea (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). Some apheredermous taxa, such as Liacaridae and Peloppiidae, show a loss of dorsocentral setae on the notogaster similar to that found in eupheredermous taxa (Schäffer et al. 2010) which may indicate eupheredermous relationships. It seems likely that the Neoliodidae and Hermannielloidea are relatively basal in the brachypyline clade. Members of the Hermannielloidea are united by having the openings of the opisthonotal glands protruding from the notogaster, either on distinct funnel-shaped tubes or on large apophyses. Both Neoliodidae and Hermanielloidea also share precocious development of apodemato-acetabular brachytracheae in the immatures with members of the Eremaeoidea and Plateremaeoidea. The Eremaeoidea commonly have costulae on the prodorsum, and the notogastral cerotegument forming large tubercles. The Plateremaeoidea also have a well-developed cerotegument, and their notogaster is generally flattened in lateral view (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009).
