The Diceratothripina are a group of fungus-feeding thrips characterised by the presence of metathoracic sternopleural sutures and widely separated maxillary stylets (Mound & Palmer 1983).

Characters (from Mound & Palmer 1983): Antennal segment IV with four (rarely two) sense cones. Maxillary stylets widely spaced, usually V-shaped. Metathoracic sternopleural sutures present.

The Macrothripina is a group of mostly large thrips that is most diverse in the Old World tropics.

Characters (from Mound & Palmer 1983): Antennal segment IV with four sense cones, these sometimes unusually long. Head sometimes with isolated ommatidium-like structure on each cheek. Metathoracic sternopleural sutures absent. Fore-tibia often with tubercle at inner apex. Abdominal tergites each with one pair of wing-retaining setae. Anal tube without prominent lateral setae.

Mecynothrips is a Palaeotropical genus of fungus-feeding thrips, characterised by the presence of at least three pairs of wing-retaining setae on each abdominal tergite (Mound & Palmer 1983).

Characters (from Mound & Palmer 1983): Large, dark species; head without complex sculpture. Eyes not prolonged ventrally. Fore-femora of male usually with one or more tubercles on inner margin. Abdominal tergites with three or more pairs of major wing-retaining setae, with anterior pair arising close to tergal antecostal ridge. Anal tube without prominent lateral setae.

Elaphrothrips

Elaphrothrips is a diverse, primarily pantropical genus of fungus-feeding thrips. Over 100 species are currently recognised in the genus, though some less-studied species may prove to be synonymous (Mound & Palmer 1983).

Characters (from Mound & Palmer 1983): Large, dark species; head without complex sculpture. Eyes not prolonged ventrally. Fore-ocellus anterior to major ocellar setae. Males with pronotum not produced at anterior angles; fore-femora often with a stout, sickle-shaped seta, without tubercle on inner margin. Abdominal tergites usually with two pairs of major wing-retaining setae (one pair in Elaphrothrips antennalis), larger individuals may have several pairs of supplementary sigmoid setae anterolateral to major pairs. Tube without long lateral setae.

Anactinothrips

Anactinothrips is a genus of thrips found in the Neotropics. At least one species, A. gustaviae, exhibits social behaviour, with adults leaving immatures out to feed daily from an overnight bivouac (Mound & Marullo 1996).

Characters (from Mound & Marullo 1996): Head with three pairs of long dorsal setae. Metanotum with one pair of very long setae. Metathoracic sternopleural sutures absent. Males with sharp angle on posterior margin of fore femora, making contact with series of ridges on fore coxae. Abdominal tergites each with one pair of wing-retaining setae.

Ophthalmothrips is a genus of small thrips found in the Old World, living at the base of grass tussocks (Mound & Palmer 1983).

Bactrothrips

Belongs within: Idolothripini.

Bactrothrips is a genus of thrips most diverse in the Old World tropics. The males of most species have a pair of long tubercles (drepanae) laterally on the sixth abdominal segment (Mound & Palmer 1983).

Characters (from Mound & Palmer 1983): Head 1.4 to 2.2 times as long as broad; stylets not retracted far into head. Epimeral sutures incomplete. Mesopraesternum boat-shaped, clearly defined from lateral sclerites. Metanotal setae 0.6 to 1.6 times as long as the distance between their bases. Wings, when fully developed, with a darker median basal line. Lateral lobes of pelta narrowly joined to centre, broadest distal part of lobe sometimes 1.3, usually more than 2.0 times as long as narrowest proximal part. Male drepanae, when present, not bearing a stout terminal seta.

The Idolothripina is a group of fungus-feeding thrips in which the males are characterised by the presence of tubercles laterally on the abdomen (Mound & Palmer 1983).

Gastrothrips is a genus of thrips found on dead twigs and branches in the tropics; they are distinctive in having three short and stout sense cones on the fourth antennal segment (Mound & Palmer 1983).

Characters (from Mound & Palmer 1983): Antennal segment III with one or two sense cones; segment IV with three short and stout sense cones. Head not reticulate. Eyes large, rounded, not prolonged ventrally. Maxillary stylets wide apart. Metathoracic sternopleural sutures present. Pelta usually triangular with lateral wings. Abdominal tergites each with one pair of wing-retaining setae. Anal tube frequently constricted at apex.
