Poronoticae

Dorsal (left) and ventral views of Unduloribates hebes, from Norton & Behan-Pelletier (2009).

Belongs within: Brachypylina.
Contains: Oribatellidae, Anachipteria, Achipteria, Campachipteria, Tegoribatidae, Heterobelbidae, Tectocepheidae, Microtegeidae, Oripodoidea, Licneremaeoidea, Scapheremaeus, Eremaeozetoidea, Ameronothroidea, Galumnoidea, Ceratozetoidea, Phenopelopidae.

The Poronoticae are a group of oribatid mites possessing an octotaxic system, a series of glandular openings (most typically four pairs) on the notogaster in the form of porose areas or saccules. Monophyly of the group is uncertain; a number of taxa lacking the octotaxic system are otherwise similar in morphology to clearly poronotic species and it is probable that the octotaxic system has evolved more than once and/or been lost in some subgroups.

Members of the Poronoticae include the Achipterioidea, known from soil, litter, mosses and liverworts. Members of the Achipteriidae have characteristic spiral internal thickenings in the bothridium and a distinct long, thin, dorsally concave genu in leg IV (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). The Epactozetidae are a Neotropical family with large, auriculate pteromorphs and foveate patterning on the notogaster (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009).

Ameronothroidea

Tegeocranellus alas, copyright B. Eamer.

Belongs within: Poronoticae.
Contains: Halozetes.

The Ameronothroidea are a group of mostly semi-aquatic oribatid mites, inhabiting locations such as ephemeral rock pools or intertidal littoral zones. Gas exchange may be facilitated during immersion by a cerotegumental plastron and/or taenidia and tecta in the pleural region (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). Some species of Ameronothridae are noteworthy for being found in extreme environments in the Arctic or Antarctic (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). Members of the genera Antarcticola and Pseudantarcticola have fewer setae on the notogaster than other genera of Ameronothridae, with only ten or eleven pairs versus the twelve or more pairs of the latter (Balogh & Balogh 1992).

Characters (from Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009): Adults with integument often weakly sclerotised and easily distorted. Prodorsum with or without lamellae, adjacent medially or separated, and lamellar cusps. Tutorium and translamella present or absent. Gena1 notch absent. Bothridial seta normally developed or extremely small, or absent. Chelicerae rhelate-dentate; palpal eupathidium acm separate from solenidion; subcapitular mentum without tectum. Axillary saccule of subcapitulum absent. Dorsophragmata and pleurophragmata present or absent. Discidium present or absent, custodium absent. Pedotectum I large, extending to base of bothridium, subdivided, or absent. Pedotectum II present or absent. With or without tecta laterally to maintain plastron around sejugal region and acetabulum III. Coxisternal setation various (3-1-3-2, 3-1-2-2, 3-1-3-2, 2-1-2-3, or 1-1-1-1). Genital setation 3, 5, or 6 pairs. Ovipositor and spermatopositor with 11-12 setae. Notogaster overhanging ventral plate. Lenticulus present or absent. Immatures apheredermous, plicate, opisthonotum often smooth and convex centrodorsally; unideficient or bideficient. Prodorsal, adanal, and latero-hysterosomal porose regions (or their saccule homologues) present or absent. Seta d variably present on tibiae and genua when respective solenidion is present.

Scheloribates (Scheloribates)

Dorsum of Scheloribates eusetosus, from Lee & Pajak (1990).

Belongs within: Scheloribatidae.

The type subgenus of the genus Scheloribates is a hyperdiverse cosmopolitan group of oribatid mites with well over 200 currently recognised species (Subías 2004). Lee & Pajak (1990) recognised three species groups primarily on the basis of a revision of Australian species. In the S. heterosetosus group, some of the hysteronotal setae are reduced to microsetae, seemingly represented by their alveoli only. In the other two species groups, all hysteronotal setae are small but definitely present. Scheloribates crassipodus has tarsi on the first three legs that are subrectangular, almost parallel-sided for over two-thirds of their length, in contrast to members of the S. eusetosus group whose tarsi taper distally for over half their length.

See also: Scheloribates.

Characters (from Balogh & Balogh 1992): Prodorsum with lamellae present, translamella absent; tutorium absent. Dorsosejugal suture arched. Notogaster with ten pairs of setae and/or setal alveoli; four pairs of sacculi; pteromorphae present, immovable. Four pairs of genital setae; one pair of aggenital setae; two pairs of anal setae; three pairs of adanal setae. Legs tridactyle.

Protoribates lophothrichus, copyright R. Penttinen.

Belongs within: Haplozetidae.

The type subgenus of the genus Protoribates is a cosmopolitan group of oribatid mites (Subías 2004), albeit one of uncertain composition owing to confusion over the identity of the type species. True Protoribates have movable pteromorphs and had previously been referred to by the junior name Xylobates (Colloff & Halliday 1998).

Characters (from Balogh & Balogh 1992a, as Protoribates and Xylobates): Prodorsum with lamellae present, translamella absent; interlamellar setae long. Dorsosejugal suture present. Notogaster smooth; ten pairs of notogastral setae short but present; four pairs of areae porosae; areae porosae Aa, A2 and A3 round; pteromorphs well developed, movable. Four to six pairs of genital setae; one pair of aggenital setae; two pairs of anal setae; three pairs of adanal setae. Legs monodactyle.

Haplozetidae

Female Rostrozetes ovulum, copyright B. Eamer.

Belongs within: Oripodoidea.
Contains: Protoribates (Protoribates), Protoribates (Triaunguis), Peloribates (Peloribates), Lauritzenia (Incabates), Indoribates (Haplozetes).

The Haplozetidae are a group of oribatid mites with well-developed, hinged pteromorphs. Members have been divided between separate families Haplozetidae and Xylobatidae or Protoribatidae based on whether the octotaxic system is composed of (respectively) sacculi or areae porosae, but this was not regarded as significant by Norton & Behan-Pelletier (2009). The Oriental species Cribrozetes multiareolatus has the usual four pairs of areae porosae disassembled into 14–18 pairs of areae porosae rougly grouped in the original position. The dorsosejugal suture is absent in the genus Perxylobates (Balogh & Balogh 1992a). Six pairs of genital setae are present in Sicaxylobates, Afroleius, Paraxylobates, Pilobates and Pilobatella; other genera have less.

Characters (from Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009): Length 250–650µm. Subcapitulum diarthric; chelicerae chelate-dentate. Notogaster with octotaxic system of porose areas or saccules; pteromorphs well developed, with hinge; insertions of adductor muscles for pteromorphs evident on notogaster; posterior notogastral tectum absent. Podotectum II present; circumpedal carina complete. Genital and anal plates separated by more than half length of genital plate; aggenital setae present; postanal porose area absent. Femora III and IV each with one porose area; solenidion σ present on genu III.
