Calliostomatinae

Calliostome Calliostoma ziziphinum, copyright Christophe Quintin.

Belongs within: Vetigastropoda.

The Calliostomatinae are a group of moderately large marine snails characterised by a quadrangular aperture. Members of the type genus Calliostoma are distinguished by the lack of an umbilicus on the shell (Knight et al. 1960).

Characters (from Knight et al. 1960): Conical or turbiniform shells mostly of medium to large-medium size, anomphalous or narrowly phaneromphalous, many with flattened base; aperture quadrangular; peristome discontinuous, parietal region usually without callus; outer lip strongly prosocline; columellar lip straight, vertical or inclined, meeting parietal lip in abrupt angle, and smooth or with denticle at lower end.
