The Ptyctima are a group of oribatid mites with a ptychoid body plan: that is, the legs can be fully withdrawn and the aspis rotated ventrad to cover the legs against the notogaster and ventral plate. Two major lineages are recognised in the Ptyctima, the Phthiracaridae and Euphthiracaroidea.

The Euphthiracaroidea are a group of ptychoid mites in which the body is strongly compressed laterally. Retraction of the legs is facilitated by relaxation of the notogaster to increase its volume (Norton 2001). In the family Synichotritiidae, the genital setae are in an antaxial position, in groups or transverse rows, while the Oribotritiidae and Euphthiracaridae both have the genital setae in a paraxial position, in a longitudinal row. The latter two families are distinguished in that the Euphthiracaridae have the ventral (anal and genital) plates fused into a single plate pair, while the Oribotritiidae have them at least partially separated. In the Bornean Temburongia patoi, the sides of the notogaster are produced ventrolaterally into two lobes that contact each other medially, in contrast to the simple notogastral margins leaving the V-shaped ventral region exposed in other genera (Balogh & Balogh 1992).

Mesotritia is a semi-cosmopolitan (unknown from Australasia) genus of euphthiracaroid box mites (Subías 2004).

Characters (from Balogh & Balogh 1992): Aspis with one or two lateral carinae. Posterior median apodeme present. Genu IV without solenidion; seta d on tibia IV short, coupled with solenidion. Genital-aggenital suture complete, genital and aggenital plates well separated; genital setae in paraxial position, in longitudinal row; interlocking triangle absent.

Austrotritia is a genus of euphthiracaroid box mites found primarily in tropical Asia and Oceania (Subías 2004).

Characters (from Balogh & Balogh 1992): Aspis with one pair of exobothridial setae present. Palpi four- or five-segmented. Posterior median apodeme absent. Genu IV with solenidion and seta. Genital-aggenital suture absent, the two plates completely fused; genital setae in paraxial position, in longitudinal row; ano-genital cleft present; interlocking triangle absent.

Indotritia

Indotritia is a cosmopolitan genus of euphthiracaroid box mites (Subías 2004). Most species possess an ano-adanal cleft on the venter and two lateral carinae on the aspis but the ano-adanal cleft is absent and only a single lateral carina is present on the aspis of the Australasian subgenus Zeaotritia (Balogh & Balogh 1992).

Acrotritia is a cosmopolitan genus of box mites that has often been referred to by the junior synonymous name Rhysotritia (Subías 2004). The type species A. ardua is cosmopolitan in distribution; its distinctive features include a smooth dorsal surface and a gradually thickened, setulose head on the sensillus.

Characters (from Balogh & Balogh 1992a, as Rhysotritia): Interlamellar setae of normal length, originating far from bothridium. Trochanters III and IV with two setae; genu IV with at least one seta. Notogaster with V-shaped split ventrally. Plates of anogenital region fused into one pair of anogenital plates; one interlocking triangle present in middle of anogenital region; genital setae in paraxial position, in longitudinal row.

Euphthiracarus is a cosmopolitan genus of box mites (Subías 2004). In members of the African and Central American subgenus Pocsia, the rostral setae are placed far back from the rostrum, between the lamellar setae, and an anogenital cleft is present. The other subgenera have the rostral setae closer to the rostrum and lack an anogenital cleft. Species of Euphthiracarus sensu stricto have a sculptured notogaster and seta a1 is long, erect and pilose; in Brasilotritia, the notogaster is smooth and seta a1 is smooth and minute (Balogh & Balogh 1992).

Phthiracarus (Phthiracarus)

Belongs within: Phthiracaridae.

The type subgenus of the genus Phthiracarus is a cosmopolitan group of box mites (Subías 2004). The effective type species, P. laevigatus, is a particularly large species found in moss and leaf-litter in broadleaf forests. Phthiracarus laevigatus is one of a handful of species (also including P. crinitus and P. nitens) possessing a full complement of lyrifissures ia, im, ip and ips; other species such as P. clemens and P. membranifer possess only two or three pairs of lyrifissures. Phthiracarus laevigatus and P. nitens have a much shorter sensillus than P. crinitus, its length less than ten times its diameter (Niedbała 1986).

Characters (from Balogh & Balogh 1992): Body surface not strongly sculptured. Interlamellar setae long and smooth; the majority of notogastral setae of the same type. Ano-adanal plates with three pairs of setae (an1–an3) and two pairs of alveoli (ad1–ad2).
