The Cheilostomata are a group of bryozoans in which the individual zooids are calcareous and box-like, and have a small orifice closed by a hinged, chitinous operculum (Prothero 1998).

The Fenestrata are a group of bryozoans known from the Early Ordovician to the Permian. Fenestrates have zoaria arranged in a lacy network with short autozooids on one side of the zoarium, often with a hemiseptum at the base (Prothero 1998).

Belongs within: Cystoporata.

The Trepostomata are a group of bryozoans known from the Ordovician to the Triassic, being particularly abundant during the Ordovician. Massive trepostome colonies form a dominant component of some Ordovician limestones (Prothero 1998).

Characters (from Prothero 1998): Zoarium including three different forms of zooecia: autopores, with large diameter, rounded cross section, short horizontal dividing walls (diaphragms); mesopores located adjacent to autopores, with smaller diameter, more angular cross section, many diaphragms; acanthopores located at junctions between two or more autopores or mesopores, tiny, thick-walled, supporting a small spine.

The Cystoporata are a group of bryozoans known from the Ordovician to the Triassic. Members of this group have curved partitions (cystiphragms) separating zooecia, and often crescentic projections (lunaria) around the apertures (Prothero 1998).

The Bryozoa, sometimes known as moss animals or lace animals, are aquatic (mostly marine) minute colonial animals with the mouth surrounded by a ring of tentacles (the lophophore) and a U-shaped gut with the anus situated outside the lophophore. The lophophore can be retrated within the tentacle sheath. A single nerve ganglion is present within the coelom, but no vascular, respiratory or excretory system (Prothero 1998). Bryozoan colonies are calcified in the Cheilostomata and Stenolaemata, giving these groups an extensive fossil record. While individual zooecia (zooid body walls) may grow continually in Stenolaemata, the Ctenostomata and Cheilostomata have zooecia that grow to a fixed size and colony growth is by the addition of zooecia (Prothero 1998).

Membraniporidae

The Membraniporidae are a family of cheilostome bryozoans with poorly calcified frontal walls and generally monomorphic zooids, and a twinned ancestrula (the initial pair of zooids in the colony) (Taylor & Monks 1997). The sea-mat Membranipora membranacea is widespread in temperate regions of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, where it grows encrusting large algae such as kelp. This species has become a notable invasive species in some regions.

The Vesiculariidae are a family of ctenostome bryozoans characterised by the presence of a distinct stolon (Harmer 1915).

Characters (from Harmer 1915): Axis relatively thick, branching, tubular; zooecia directly attached to axis by contracted or expanded base; axis usually divided by diaphragms into internodes, each of which gives off a number of zooecia; budding only from axis. Tentacles usually 8-10. Gizzard generally present.

Lepraliellidae is a family of bryozoans (including both erect and encrusting forms) with relatively smooth frontals and an avicularium set in the proximal ring of the orifice (Gordon 1993).
