Plateremaeoidea

Contains: Pheroliodes, Adrodamaeus, Gymnodamaeus, Pedrocortesella.

The Plateremaeoidea are a group of oribatid mites in which the notogaster is often more or less flattened dorsally; members of this group are characterised by a reduction in the dorsocentral setae, with at most only a single pair present, though a number of setae remain around the posterior margin of the notogaster. The legs are thin and filiform in members of the families Gymnodamaeidae, Idiodamaeidae and Aleurodamaeus though not in other families. The Idiodamaeidae have three pairs of anal setae and a single solenidion on tarsus II, in contrast to the two pairs of anal setae and two solenidia on tarsus II in Aleurodamaeus and Gymnodamaeidae. Aleurodamaeus has a dorsally convex notogaster and also possesses long, twisted, corkscrew-like caudal notogastral setae. (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009).

Members of the family Gymnodamaeidae have the notogaster concave in lateral aspect. The family as listed below differs from some circumscriptions in excluding the austral genus Austrodamaeus, which differs from gymnodamaeids sensu stricto in having a long filiform sensillus, three pairs of anal setae, and the lamellar setae behind and above the rostral setae. Larger members of the Gymnodamaeidae bear an interlamellar apophysis on the prodorsum, but this structure is absent in the smaller species of the genera Joshuella, Nortonella, Jacotella and some smaller species of Gymnodamaeus. The genus Plesiodamaeus is distinguished by having the cerotegument highly piled on the dorsum of the body. Socketed leg joints are characteristic of the genera Adrodamaeus and Arthrodamaeus (Balogh & Balogh 1992 vol. 1).

The Pheroliodidae are distinguished by the presence of a distinct furrow on the prodorsum bordered by lateral apophyses. The Plateremaeidae have a neotrichous coxisternal region, a relative high number of leg setae, and filiform bothridial setae (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). In most plateremaeid genera the notogaster is also more or less circular though Paralopheremaeus is a more elongate oval (Balogh & Balogh 1992).

Characters (from Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009): Adults with subnormal apodemato-acetabular system, lacking trachea I; with or without porose sac opening into acetabulum. Well-developed cerotegument covering body and setae. Prodorsum usually with deep transverse furrow. Prodorsal lamellae and costulae absent. Parastigmatic enantiophysis, dorsophragmata and pleurophragmata absent. Notogaster flattish in lateral aspect; usually concave inside distinct margin; four, five, or six pairs of notogastral setae. Genal notch absent. Subcapitulum diarthric; palpal eupathidium acm separate from solenidion. Tibia I with long apophysis distally, bearing solenidia φl and φ2; femora III–IV with retrotecta; tibiae with or without retrotecta. Tarsus II with one or two solenidia. Leg segments with or without internalised porose organs. Larva plicate, unideficient. Nymphs eupheredermous, quadrideficient. Platytracheae or brachytracheae present. Small porose sclerites in adanal or aggenital region present or absent.
