Hypothenemus is a genus of bark beetles primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world; members of this genus are consanguineously polygynous and myelophagous, phloeophagous or spermophagous (Wood 1986). The coffee borer beetle Hypothenemus hampei is one of the most significant pests of coffee crops, boring into berries and constructing galleries in the endosperm.

Characters (from Wood 1986): Body length 0.6 to 2.8 mm; male dwarfed, flightless; mature colour usually darker, vestiture more abundant; antennal funicle 3- to 5-segmented, when 5-segmented then suture 1 of club partly septate; antennal club clearly marked by sutures; both basal and lateral margins of pronotum marked by a fine raised line, anterior margin of pronotum usually armed by 1–8 serrations; procoxae contiguous; tarsal segment 3 narrow, not bilobed.
