Calosphaeriaceae

Phaeoacremonium parasiticum, photographed by K. Nishimura.

Belongs within: Sordariomycetidae.

The Calosphaeriaceae are a family of fungi that mostly appear to be saprobes in dead bark (Cannon & Kirk 2007).

Characters (from Cannon & Kirk 2007): Stromata immersed in bark, varied in development, composed of fungal cells mixed with host tissue. Ascomata perithecial, often aggregated in valsoid or eutypoid clusters, the ostioles usually converging, papillate or long-necked and lined with periphyses; peridium reddish brown to black, composed of several rows of compressed cells. lnterascal tissue of broad thin-walled tapering paraphyses. Asci formed in a small fascicle from a short ascogenous hypha which sometimes proliferates to form a spike-like cluster, thin-walled with one functional wall-layer, the apex often thickened and refractive with a J- apical ring. Ascospores hyaline or pale yellow, allantoid, cylindrical or ellipsoidal, thin-walled, mostly aseptate, budding within the ascus in a few species. Anamorphs hyphomycetous, Acremonium-like or Phialophora-like.
