Eremaeidae

Eueremaeus foveolatus, from here.

Belongs within: Circumdehiscentiae.

The Eremaeidae are a group of oribatid mites usually characterised by anal neotrichy, with at least three (usually more) pairs of anal setae. Members of the European genus Tricheremaeus also have a higher number of setae on the notogaster than other species (fifteen to twenty pairs versus ten or eleven), with the setae being particularly long. The genus Proteremaeus is exceptional in only having two pairs of anal setae, together with three pairs of adanal setae (Balogh & Balogh 1992a).

Characters (from Balogh & Balogh 1992a; Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009): Length 400–800 µm. Prodorsum without true lamellae. Dorsosejugal suture usually arched. Ten to twenty pairs of well-developed notogastral setae; octotaxic system absent. Six pairs of genital setae; one pair of aggenital setae; two to nine pairs of anal setae; three to six pairs of adanal setae. Legs tridactyle; porose areas present distoventrally on tibiae I–IV and proximoventrally on tarsi I–IV.
