The Ceratozetoidea are a group of oribatid mites most diverse in temperate to boreal regions, though some species are also present in the tropics. They are found in a wide variety of habitats, including terrestrial, arboreal and even semi-aquatic environs, and include mycophages, necrophages and detritus feeders (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). Nymphs of most families (where known) bear characteristic macrosclerites, though these are absent in the subaquatic Zetomimidae whose inclusion in the Ceratozetoidea has therefore been questioned (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). Members of Ceratokalummidae, Humerobatidae and some Mycobatidae possess pteromorphs that are at least partially hinged and more or less movable; in the remaining ceratozetoids the hinge is absent and the pteromorphs are immobile (Balogh & Balogh 1992a). In Ceratokalummidae, the pteromorphs are particularly large and auriculate, able to cover the legs when closed. The Maudheimiidae, a small family endemic to east Antarctica, have the pteromorphs reduced. In many ceratozetoids, the notogaster has a posterior tectum, but this is absent in Maudheimiidae, Euzetidae and Ceratozetidae. The Zetomimidae, together with the unique species Onychobates nidicola, described from the nest of the grey warbler Gerygone igata, have differing numbers of claws on the fore and hind legs. Onychobates nidicola has a reduced number of porose areas on the notogaster compared to Zetomimidae and has the claw on leg I expanded medially (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009).
The Ceratokalummidae are oribatid mites with auriculate pteromorphs like those of the Galumnidae, from which they differ in the presence of well-developed prodorsal lamellae. The lamellar cuspides are fused in genera other than Achipterina and Cultrobates, in which they remain separate (Balogh & Balogh 1992 vol. 1).
Characters (from Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009): Prodorsum with lamellae, adjacent medially or separated; tutorium, lamellar cusps, translamella present or absent. Genal notch present. Chelicerae chelate-dentate; palpal eupathidium acm attached to solenidion; subcapitular mentum with or without complete tectum. Axillary saccule of subcapitulum generally present. Discidium and custodium present, postanal porose area generally present. Pedotectum I large, extending to base of bothridium. Pedotectum II present. Notogaster with or without lenticulus, posterior tectum present or absent, if present, overlapping medially or not; pteromorphs usually presnet, with or without hinge. Notogastral setation 10-15 pairs. Octotaxic system developed as 1-7 pairs (usually four) of porose areas, saccules or tubules. Genital setation 4-6 pairs. Bothridium without internal, spiral thickenings, cup-shaped, or with medial and lateral scales. Genu IV shorter than tibia IV; tibia IV with solenidion. Immatures with opisthonotum with macroslerites, apheredermous, integument smooth or partially tuberculate; unideficient; humeral organ generally present; opisthonotal setae without excentric porose area at base (except in Humerobatidae); integument surrounding opening of opisthonotal gland porose; single circumgenital sclerite usually absent (except in Euzetes); seta d absent from tibiae and genua when respective solenidion is present.
