Hermanniellidae

Hermanniella sp., photographed by Pfliegler Walter.

Belongs within: Circumdehiscentiae.

The Hermanniellidae are a group of oribatid mites in which the tritonymphal scalp adheres very closely to the adult. In genera other than Hermanniella and Mahunkobates, the bothridia have become closely placed to each other and more or less removed from the prodorsal margin. The Venezuelan Mahunkobates singularis has the posteromarginal setae on the notogaster spiniform and ciliate, in contrast to the setiform and smooth setae on the remainder of the notogaster, and the more uniform notogastral setae in most species of Hermanniella (Balogh & Balogh 1992).

Characters (from Balogh & Balogh 1992): Prodorsum without true lamellae; lamellar setae well developed. Hysterosoma with lateral tube. Notogaster without concentrically arranged scalps, but tritonymphal scalp adheres closely to notogaster and bears the most conspicuous notogastral setae; 4-14 pairs of well developed setae, the remainder extremely small.
