Suctobelbidae

Allosuctobelba obtusa, photographed by Huijie Gan.

Belongs within: Circumdehiscentiae.
Contains: Suctobelbella (Suctobelbella), Suctobelbella (Flagrosuctobelba), Suctobelbella (Ussuribata).

The Suctobelbidae are a family of oribatid mites with slender, elongate chelicerae. The genera Suctobelbila and Suctobelbiloides are distinctive in the notogaster having very short setae borne on large rounded tubercles; other genera lack such tubercles and the setae are usually longer. The Holarctic genus Rhinosuctobelba has a particularly elongate rostrum, with a single pair of large lateral teeth. Geniculate rostral setae are found in the genera Novosuctobelba, Fenestrobelba and Suctobelbella (Balogh & Balogh 1992).

Characters (from Balogh & Balogh 1992; Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009): Length 170–300 µm. Subcapitulum anarthric; rutella forming tube; chelicerae attenuate-edentate. Prodorsum centrally granular or not; rostrum usually more or less pointed; rostral setae sometimes geniculate; paired flat regions (tectopedial fields) and short costulae or lamellar knob may be present. Palpgenu separate from femur, with one seta; palptarsus with eight setae; distal eupathids on palptarsus fused baseally, appearing like forked seta. Anterior margin of notogaster may bear 2-4 pairs of teeth or cristae; octotaxic system absent. Apodemata III absent, epimeres III and IV fused into a single plate. Trochanter III with one seta; tarsus IV with two ventral setae more strongly developed, clavate, terminating bluntly, often pinnate.
