Contains: Odontocepheus (Odontocepheus), Diplobodes, Yoshiobodes, Gibbicepheus (Gibbicepheus), Austrocarabodes (Austrocarabodes), Carabodes (Carabodes), Carabodes (Klappariches).

The Carabodidae are a family of oribatid mites with more or less parallel lamellae on the prodorsum (Balogh & Balogh 1992). Though diverse in adult biology, all species are probably endophagous as nymphs, burrowing in substrates such as decaying wood. Adults of many species are arboreal, feeding on fungi and lichens (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). In a number of genera the notogaster bears longitudinal rows of large tubercles, such as in Gibbicepheus or Diplobodes. The genera Spathulocepheus and Trichocarabodes are distinctive in the high number of setae on their genital plates: eight pairs in Trichocarabodes, ten in Spathulocepheus. Other genera have at most seven pairs of genital setae (Balogh & Balogh 1992).

Characters (from Balogh & Balogh 1992): Prodorsum with true lamellae; lamellae marginal, almost parallel or weakly converging; interlamellar setae well developed. Notogaster usually pentagonal, with more or less parallel sides and large humeral tubercle.
