Cepheidae

Cepheus corae, from here.

Belongs within: Brachypylina.

The Cepheidae are a family of often relatively large oribatid mites, usually with a sculptured integument. Species of Cepheus can be found in moss, litter and rotting wood. Cepheus latus is a borer in birch twigs (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). The genera Ommatocepheus, Eupterotegaeus, Conoppia, Sphodrocepheus and Tritegeus have tridactylous legs; the remaining genera are monodactyle (Balogh & Balogh 1992).

Characters (from Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009): Length 500–1200 µm. Integument usually sculptured. Subcapitulum diarthritic; chelicerae chelate-dentate; subcapitular mentum without tectum. Prodorsum with true lamellae. Scalps absent. Lenticulus absent. Notogaster without setae centrodorsally, all notogastral setae in marginal or posteromarginal position. Three pairs of adanal setae, positioned adanally and postanally. Tarsus I with two solenidia.
