Belongs within: Metacopina.
Contains: Cavellinidae, Cytherellidae, Kloedenellidae.
The Platycopina are a group of ostracods that are first recorded from the Lower Silurian, named for the relatively flat sides of most members of the group. Members of the Platycopina are characterised by the lack of a duplicature and the present of a posteriorly situated brood pouch within the carapace, demarcated by a limen (Adamczak 2003a). They are represented in the modern fauna by the family Cytherellidae, and possibly by the unusual Punciidae. The Punciidae are known from dredgings in the South Pacific and have an elongate, delicate carapace with a long, straight hinge line and contact margins extended by a wide, septate fringe (Benson et al. 1961).
