Cytherellidae

Cytherella sp., copyright Brandão, Simone Nunes & Yasuhara Moriaki.

Belongs within: Platycopina.

The Cytherellidae are a group of ostracods known from the Jurassic to the present, characterised by carapace valves with muscle scars arranged in two curved parallel rows (Benson et al. 1961).

Characters (from Benson et al. 1961): Carapace mostly oval in side view, dorsal margin convex, anterior and posterior ends generally subequal in height; right valve typically larger than left. Marginal pore canals absent or represented by short simple canals of normal type; contact furrow entire, hinge undifferentiated; selvage of smaller valve forming valve edge; adductor-muscle field composed of two curved parallel rows, each with five to nine elongated spots. Dimorphic, with brood section in posterior part of carapace. Antennae biramous, equal, the basal part biarticulate and geniculate, with numerous setae attached to both margins. Antennules very large and strong, multiarticulate, geniculate at the base, with short spines. Mandibles small and feeble, with a large palp. Three pairs of thoracic limbs, all maxilliform. Mandibular palps and maxillulae provided with pair of combs with large bristles attached to inner surfaces. Maxillulae and third post-oral limbs provided with large branchial plates; fourth post-oral limb rudimentary in female, evolute and prehensile in male. Furcal rami small and narrow, distinctly separate, spinose at apices.
