Belongs within: Cephalopoda.
Contains: Tainoceratoidea, Aipoceratidae, Solenochilidae, Clydonautilaceae, Trigonoceratidae, Centroceratidae, Nautilaceae.
The Nautilida were a group of nautiloid cephalopods first appearing in the Lower Devonian. Most species were coiled, though a few early forms were cyrtoconic or straight. Nautilids include the only cephalopods other than ammonoids and coleoids to survive the end of the Triassic, and the only coiled nautiloids to survive into the Carboniferous. Nautilids usually possess a narrow siphuncle with thin connecting rings (Teichert & Moore 1964).
