The Cephalopoda are a class of molluscs first known from the Late Cambrian; among modern taxa, cephalopods include the shelled Nautilidae and the Coleoidea (squids, cuttlefish, octopods) that lack an external shell. Traditionally, the cephalopods have been divided between three subclasses, the Nautiloidea, Ammonoidea and Coleoidea, but the Nautiloidea in the broad sense are paraphyletic with regard to the other two groups.

The earliest cephalopods are known from the Upper Cambrian and had straight to slightly curved shells with tightly packed septa; these stem representatives may not yet have adopted the nektonic lifestyles of crown cephalopods. An alternative structure for cephalopod evolution was proposed by Smith & Caron (2010), who interpreted the Early to Middle Cambrian Nectocarididae as early cephalopods and suggested that the first cephalopods may have lacked a shell (see links below for comments on why this may be unlikely).

Characters (from Sweet 1964): Ancestrally with a shell divided into chambers by transverse septa; chambers connected by a tubular siphuncle piercing the septa; shell originally conical and more or less straight but becoming elongate and coiled in many lineages. In those species for which soft anatomy is known, body is elongate with an anterior head and posterior ventral mass; mouth with a parrot-like beak and surrounded by an array of tentacles or arms; ancestral molluscan foot modified into a muscular hyponome (siphon) used to eject water from the mantle cavity and so provide propulsion. Digestive system looped so that mouth and anus are both more or less anterior.
