Lanceoppia

Dorsum and venter of Lanceoppia (Lanceoppia) hexapili, from Balogh & Balogh (1992, vol. 2).

Belongs within: Oppioidea.

Lanceoppia is a genus of oribatid mites whose name refers to the possession of a lanceolate or elongately fusiform sensillus. In subgenera Baioppia and Lancelalmoppia, the notogastral setae la are inserted anterior to setae lm; in the remaining subgenera the setae la are level with lm or more posterior (Balogh & Balogh 1992). Baioppia was originally described from New Zealand, but a single species L. (B.) talacrensis was described in 2000 from Britain (Subías 2004). The lamellar and translamellar lines on the prodorsum are poorly developed or absent in the subgenera Lanceoppia and Lancelalmoppia. Bicristoppia species possess two sclerotised tubercles behind the interlamellar setae and have the lamellar and translamellar lines in a quadrangular configuration whereas Convergoppia species lack such tubercles and have convergent lamellar lines (Balogh & Balogh 1992).

Characters (from Balogh & Balogh 1992): Sensillus lanceolate or elongately fusiform. Notogaster with nine pairs of setae. Crista absent. Anterior margin of notogaster without protruding humeral processes. Setae c2 absent. Genital plates with six pairs of setae. Fissure iad inverse apoanal.
