Ramusella

Dorsum and close-up of sensillus of Ramusella (Insculptoppia) paolii, from here.

Belongs within: Oppiidae.

Ramusella is a genus of oribatid mites characterised by the presence of three pairs of sigillae between the interlamellar setae. It is divided into subgenera distinguished by features of the rostral setae, which are straight and divergent in Rectoppia, and convergent in the other subgenera. Ramusella (Ramusella) has the rostral setae geniculate and placed close together, while Sabahoppia, Insculptoppia and Inscultoppiella have the arched rostral setae placed further apart. Ramusella (Sabahoppia) blattarum has a radiate sensillus and lamellar setae placed nearer the rostral setae than the interlamellar setae; Insculptoppia and Insculptoppiella have the lamellar setae nearer the interlamellar setae. These latter two subgenera are distinguished by the sensillus, which is laterally ciliate in Insculptoppiella, but unilaterally ciliate or pectinate in Insculptoppia (Balogh & Balogh 1992).

The type species of the genus, Ramusella puertomonttensis, is subcosmopolitan, being recorded from scattered locations around the world, including the Mediterranean, eastern and southern Asia, Fiji and Chile (Subías 2004).

Characters (from Balogh & Balogh 1992): Translamellar line usually well visible. Interlamellar setae present. Three pairs of sigillae present between interlamellar setae (sometimes hardly visible). Notogaster with nine pairs of setae, all of same length. Anterior margin of notogaster without protruding humeral processes. Setae la at about same transverse level as setae lm or more posterior. Genital plates with five pairs of setae. Fissure iad paraanal.
