Heterotremata

Warty crab Eriphia verrucosa, from here.

Belongs within: Brachyura.
Contains: Calappidae, Gecarcinucidae, Leucosiidae, Portunidae, Trichodactylidae, Hymenosomatidae, Inachidae, Epialtidae, Majidae, Pisidae, Parthenopidae, Cancridae, Xanthidae, Trapeziidae, Panopeidae, Goneplacidae, Menippidae, Pilumnidae.

The Heterotremata are a diverse group of crabs, characterised by having the male gonopores coxal and the female gonopores sternal. Whether the Heterotremata are a monophyletic group, or paraphyletic with regard to the Thoracotremata (in which both sexes have sternal gonopores), remains an open question. In members of the group Oxyrhyncha, the carapace is more or less narrowed anteriorly and often produced to form a pseudorostrum (Bennett 1964).
