Phthiracarus (Phthiracarus)

Phthiracarus boresetosus, copyright R. Penttinen.

Belongs within: Phthiracaridae.

The type subgenus of the genus Phthiracarus is a cosmopolitan group of box mites (Subías 2004). The effective type species, P. laevigatus, is a particularly large species found in moss and leaf-litter in broadleaf forests. Phthiracarus laevigatus is one of a handful of species (also including P. crinitus and P. nitens) possessing a full complement of lyrifissures ia, im, ip and ips; other species such as P. clemens and P. membranifer possess only two or three pairs of lyrifissures. Phthiracarus laevigatus and P. nitens have a much shorter sensillus than P. crinitus, its length less than ten times its diameter (Niedbała 1986).

Characters (from Balogh & Balogh 1992): Body surface not strongly sculptured. Interlamellar setae long and smooth; the majority of notogastral setae of the same type. Ano-adanal plates with three pairs of setae (an1an3) and two pairs of alveoli (ad1ad2).
