Sclerosomatidae

Male Leiobunum vittatum, from here.

Belongs within: Phalangioidea.
Contains: Jussara, Zaleptus, Hypsibunus, Ceratobunus, Verpulus, Harmanda, Gagrella, Dentobunus, Eugagrella, Strandia, Aurivilliola, Leiobunum, Holcobunus, Geaya, Prionostemma, Homalenotus, Nelima, Pseudogagrella, Psathyropus, Melanopa, Marthana, Gagrellula.

The Sclerosomatidae is a hyperdiverse group of long-legged harvestmen that is most diverse in Eurasia and the Americas, with relatively few species in Africa and Australasia. Though largely supported by molecular phylogenetic analyses, the clade is poorly defined morphologically; notable features found in many (though not all) species include a more or less straight penis, often with membranous winglets on either side of the shaft behind the glans, a ventral tooth-comb on the pedipalpal claw, and fusion of the dorsal segmentation to form a more or less hardened scutum. Most members of the Sclerosomatidae have been divided in the past between the subfamilies Sclerosomatinae, Leiobuninae and Gagrellinae, but recent phylogenetic analyses have indicated that the Leiobuninae and Gagrellinae, at least, are broadly polyphyletic (monophyly of the Sclerosomatinae remains largely uncertain). Instead, molecular phylogenies are more consistent with distinct European, South American, Asian and North American clades (Hedin et al. 2012).
