Malacothrips is a genus of thrips found in leaf litter, characterised by having the head constricted behind the eyes (Mound & Marullo 1996).

Characters (from Mound & Marullo 1996): Head constricted behind eyes; postocular setae well developed; maxillary stylets usually retracted to level of postocular setae; epimera divided into two sclerites, bearing one pair of epimeral setae.
