The Amphigerontiinae are a group of barklice characterised by amorphous development of the male abdominal apex and a reduced phallosome (New & Lienhard 2007).

Characters (from New & Lienhard 2007): Fore wing veins R4+5 and M not connected or fused; vein M comprising distal border of discoidal cell usually convex; pterostigma relatively deep. Male hypandrial sclerites encompassing abdominal sternites 8 and 9 so apex of male abdomen appears 'encapsulated'; parameres open distally (no phallosome frame); apophysis of male paraproct broadly rounded. Female with apex of dorsal gonapophysis valve a slender tapered process.
