The Chrysomeloidea are a diverse clade of beetles containing the families Chrysomelidae, Cerambycidae and allies. Members of this clade have pseudotetramerous tarsi and antennae lacking a club. The Chrysomelidae, leaf beetles, mostly feed on living plant tissue. Members include the Bruchinae, seed-feeding species with a somewhat rostrate head that superficially resemble weevils in appearance. The Chrysomelinae are generally ovate beetles characterised by a truncate clypeus whose larvae feed externally and are often armed with repugnatorial glands. The Cryptocephalinae usually have a strongly hypognathous head that is deeply inserted into the prothorax. The Eumolpinae have larvae that are found in soil and probably feed on plant roots (Lawrence & Britton 1991).
Smaller families within the Chrysomeloidea include the Oxypeltidae, a group of metallic-coloured woodboring beetles found in southern South America (Bouchard 2014).
