Contains: Oligotrophini, Alycaulini, Asphondyliini.

The Cecidomyiinae are a diverse group of midges, many of which cause galls in plants but which also include non-galling phytophagous, mycophagous and predatory forms (Gagné 1981).

Characters (from Gagné 1981): Ocelli absent. Basal section of Rs usually absent or weaker than other veins. Male gonocoxites free ventrally. Female cercus one-segmented, often fused.
