The Alycaulini are a group of gall midges characterised by the presence of a series of ovoid bumps on the ovipositor (Gagné 1981).
Characters (from Gagné 1981, as Alycaulina): Antennal flagellomeres short, barrel-shaped. Ocelli absent. R5 half to two-thirds length of wing, straight, closely adjacent to R1 and C. Tarsal claws toothed. Male with tergite 8, if present, setose along caudal margin and sclerotized at least caudally; gonocoxites free ventrally. Female with basal half of ovipositor with longitudinal striae that are proximodorsally interrupted and enlarged to form ovoid sclerotized bumps; cercus one-segmented, without hooked setae.
