Belongs within: Acariformes.

Sellnickochthonius is a cosmopolitan genus of brachychthoniid mites with three pairs of suprapleural plates present. A number of species in the genus are known from seemingly disjunct distributions, such as S. suecicus found in the Holarctic region and Australasia (Subías 2004).

Characters (from Balogh & Balogh 1992): Notogaster with two transverse sutures and three shields, no setae arising within sutures; shield Na bearing two rows of setae (c and d); fields of shield Na differentiated into anterior and posterior group, often paired in median line; seta d2 in marginal position, aligned with longitudinal row of setae cp-e2. Pleural region with three pairs of suprapleural plates (SpC, SpE and SpF). Two pairs of adanal setae (ad2 and ad3) widened, blade-like. Peranal plate present.
