Teinogenys

Teinogenys aurilegulus, from Carne (1957).

Belongs within: Dynastinae.

Teinogenys is a genus of dynastine beetles widespread in arid regions of Australia.

Characters (from Carne 1957): Reddish brown, black, or bicolorous, 11-17 mm in length. Mentum highly compressed, narrow, apex reflexed abruptly, often so strongly as to cause it to appear displaced ventrally; ligula obscured. Maxillae with galeae reduced to small pyramidal pieces; palps slender, conspicuous, the fourth segment usually cylindrical and tapering, sometimes dilated, and distally truncate. Mandibles simple, apices rounded, always visible beyond truncated face of clypeus, the latter usually deep and setose. Labrum often exposed. Antennae 10-segmented, club straight or slightly sinuate, usually bitexturous, setose on both faces, longer than shaft; segments 1-2 always, 3-7 occasionally, setose. Clypeus transverse, rounded, emarginate, and sometimes tuberculate in the middle, or with clypeofrontal suture angulate and giving rise to a strong interocular tubercle; frons commonly depressed when cephalic armature lacking. Ocular canthi setose, narrow, not angulate in respect of clypeus. Pronotum transverse, lightly punctate, often with anteromedian tubercle and impression. Pronotum usually widest in anterior half, anterolateral angles obtuse or subacute, basal ridge often obsolete. Scutellum sometimes with a median striole; elytra with sutural striae linear-punctate, rarely punctate, disc heavily punctate in black species. Epipleurae well developed, with conspicuous lateral setae extending almost or completely to apices of elytra. Fore tibiae tridentate, teeth very slender and sharp; tarsi with first segment equal to or shorter than fifth. Hind legs slender; tibiae bicarinate, marginal ciliae slender, sharp, closely set; spurs sharp, unequal, curved; hind tarsi with first and fifth segments subequal in length. Pygidium convex, usually with abundant long setae across base, or on most of disc; apical ridge setose or glabrous. Coxae and abdominal sternites with abundant white, yellow, or orange vestiture. Female with antennal club shorter than shaft; pronotum evenly convex; pygidium less convex and less setose than in male.
