'Cryptoryctes'

Cryptoryctes brittoni, from here.

Belongs within: Dynastinae.

Cryptoryctes (name preoccupied) has been recognised as a genus of Australasian beetles in which males bear elevated processes or horns on the anterior margin and posterolateral corners of the pronotum.

Characters (from Carne 1957): Male reddish brown, bicolorous, or black, 12-27 mm in length. Mentum strongly compressed and reflexed at ligula. Maxillary palps slender, usually very conspicuous, the last segment truncate; galeae reduced to small, untoothed pieces. Labrum usually, mandibles always, visible; clypeofrontal ridge transverse, strongly elevated; clypeus at angle to plane of frons, often vertical, always concave and with a truncated anterior face, this either glabrous or setose. Disc of clypeus rarely setose, that of frons frequently so; ocular canthi large, rounded, or subangulate, densely setose. Antennae 10-segmented, club longer than shaft; usually setose on inner face of club and on first 2 or more intermediate segments. Pronotum with anterior margin corneous, bearing a median elevated process or horn, the latter tapering to a simple or bifid apex, occasionally trifid or branched. Anterolateral angles acute or obtuse, lateral ridges sometimes contracted or interrupted just before basolateral angles, their margins frequently bearing dorsal setae. Basal ridge sometimes continuous; disc often setose, transversely rugulose, with deep excavation limited by elevated angles or lateral horns; the latter usually simple, sometimes with slight irregularities; disc rarely depressed below level of basal margin. Elytra with sutural striae linear or linear-punctate, disc with well-defined striae, punctures simple or weakly umbilicate, surface sometimes microreticulate; epipleurae with short lateral setae continuous to apices. Fore tibiae acutely tridentate; tarsi with fifth segment usually longer than first; claws simple, slender. Postcoxal prosternal process short, setose, usually not visible in intact specimen. Hind legs slender or moderately stout: tibiae bicarinate, with distal ciliae short, sharp, and closely set; spurs unequal, curved; hind tarsi elongate, first and fifth segments subequal in length. Pygidium setose across base; apical ridge glabrous or setose; abdominal sternites setose across posterior margins. Female with clypeus rounded, in same plane as frons, flat, emarginate only anteriorly. Palps and antennae much smaller than in male. Pronotum weakly convex, anterolateral angles subacute or acute, anterior margin thickened in middle, surface moderately punctate. Hind tarsi short, first segment slightly dilated, shorter than remaining segments combined.
