Umbellinaceae

Various external views of holotype (1–5) and paratype (6–9) of Quasiumbella carnarvonensis, from Edgell (2003).

Belongs within: Streptophyta.

The Umbellinaceae are a group of fossil protists (currently thought to be early streptophyte algae) known from the Devonian and Lower Carboniferous (Edgell 2003).

Characters (from Edgell 2003): Subconical to spherical gyrogonites, with simple or slightly rimmed aperture and basal pore; wall two-layered with thin dark internal layer and thick outer layer of radial fibres; mostly with smooth outer surface, occasionally with vertical ridges or spiny surface ornamentation.
