Heterosternus

A specimen of Solenosternus photographed by Juan Enrique Barriga-Tuñón. So far as I have been able to find, the species listed below have never been illustrated.
Belongs within: Baridinae.

This is a diverse genus of weevils found in South and Central America. Marshall (1946) identified that the genus name is preoccupied and provided the replacement name Heterothorax. Kuschel (1983) synonymised this genus with Solenosternus.

Characters (from Casey 1922): Oval to cylindric in form, always rather closely and strongly, sometimes extremely densely, punctate. Beak varying from rather short and moderately thick to longer and slender, especially in the female; antennae moderate, with oval pubescent club. Prothorax never more than feebly tubulate at apex; scutellum varying from minute and rounded to transversely quadrate in form; elytra moderately grooved, individually rounded at apex; pygidium small and semicircular. Tarsi small and slender, with the claws contiguous at base and generally feebly but sometimes quite notably diverging.
