Limnoriidea

Gribbles Limnoria lignorum, from NOAA.

Belongs within: Scuticoxifera.

The Limnoriidea are a group of marine isopods united by the absence of a mandibular molar (Brandt & Poore 2003). The gribble Limnoria lignorum is a significant pest of marine timbers, gnawing into exposed wood (Hatch 1947).

Characters (from Brandt & Poore 2003): Pleonites 1–5 or 1–4 free, pleonite 1 similar to others or narrower. Pleotelson underside flat, without ventrolateral ridges (pleopods not enclosed laterally). Antenna 1 with or without scale. Mandibular lacinia mobilis present or absent. Mandibular molar absent. Maxillipedal enditre reaching at least distal margin of palp article 4, non-tapering, slender (except in Keuphylia). Dorsal coxal plate 7 similar to others. Pleopods 3–5 endopods more or less oval or rectangular, rounded distally. Uropodal rami ventral to pleotelson, articulating from side to side along vertical axis or distal.

Belongs within: Cymothoida.

The Cirolaninae are a group of mostly marine isopods with a secondary unguis present on the pereopodal dactyli (Kensley & Schotte 1989).

Characters (from Kensley & Schotte 1989): Frontal lamina short, flat. Clypeus flattened, not projecting. Antennal peduncular articles 4 and 5 subequal, longer than articles 1–3. Pereopods with secondary unguis on dactyli. Penes reduced or absent. Pleonite 5 always overlapped by pleonite 4. Pleopod 2 in male with copulatory stylet articulating basally.

Bopyridae

Dorsal (left) and ventral (centre) views of female and dorsal view of male (right) of Parabopyrella richardsonae, from Marilyn Schotte.

Belongs within: Epicaridea.

The Bopyridae are a group of isopods parasitic as adults on decapod crustaceans, while larvae (where known) are parasites of calanoid copepods (Markham 1985).

Characters (from Markham 1985): Female distinctly segmented, slightly to greatly asymmetrical, depressed. Head occasionally fused with first pereomere, sometimes enclosed by frontal lamina; antenna rudimentary; maxilliped of two segments, often with anteromedial palp; posteroventral border of head usually with one or two lateral projections on each side. All seven pereomeres usually distinct; pereopods reduced, usually of seven pairs, though up to six occasionally absent from one side; pereopods prehensile, dorsal to lateral, isomorphic; oostegites of five (rarely seven) pairs often produced into lateral plates resembling pleopodal rami; pleopods generally present on all but final pleomere; pleopods rudimentary or modified for respiration, uniramous or biramous, isomorphic; uropods, when present, terminal, uniramous or biramous, often of same form as pleopods or lateral plates. Male much smaller than female, at least twice as long as wide, symmetrical, distinctly segmented. Head rounded anteriorly, occasionally fused with first pereomere; antennae often prominent. Pereon of seven distinct pereomeres; pair of ventral prehensile pereopods on each pereomere, usually isomorphic except first and sometimes second rarely conspicuously larger than others. Pleon of one to six pleomeres; if unsegmented, usually lacking appendages; if multisegmented, often with sessile to flaplike uniramous or biramous pleopods on each pleomere but last; uropods, if present, uniramous or biramous and terminal.

Water hoglouse Asellus aquaticus, copyright Peter Pfeiffer.

Belongs within: Asellidae.

The subgenus Asellus of the genus freshwater isopod genus Asellus is characterised by a lack of spines on the propodite of the male first legs (Hatch 1947).

Characters (from Hatch 1947): Body usually elongate, depressed. Head usually narrower and shorter than first thoracic segment; eyes usually present; mandible with three-segmented palp. Abdomen usually not longer than broad. Male with inner margin of posterior surface of propodite of first legs not produced in teeth or immovable spines.

Asellidae

One-spotted waterlouse Proasellus meridianus, copyright Keith Lugg.

Belongs within: Asellota.
Contains: Asellus (Asellus).

The Asellidae are a group of freshwater crustacean of the Holarctic region (Henry et al. 1986).

Characters (from Henry et al. 1986): Antenna bearing a squama; maxillipedal oostegite reduced to a "Wasserstrudelapparat" (water swirling apparatus); pleonites 1 and 2 reduced both in length and width, forming a stalk between pereion and pleotelson; male copulatory organ (endopodite of pleopods 2) secondarily uniarticulate, but complex.

Crinocheta

Nagurus cristatus, copyright Arp Kruihof.

Belongs within: Oniscidea.
Contains: Oniscidae, Philosciidae, Armadillidae, Porcellio.

The Crinocheta are a group of terrestrial isopods characterised by an 'embolophore' type of male genitalia with the two vasa deferentia opening by separate pores on either side of the penis towards its apex (Hatch 1947, as Embolophora). They are divided between the Armadilloidea, in which the pleopods carry respiratory pseudotracheae, and the Oniscoidea in which such structures are absent.
