Systasis

Female Systasis, from Bouček (1988).

Belongs within: Ormocerinae.

Systasis is a cosmopolitan genus of wasps of uncertain biology: they may parasitise insect larvae within galls, or they may be gall-formers themselves (Bouček 1988).

Characters (from Bouček 1988): Body with more or less distinct metallic tinge; antenna with seven segments between pedicel and clava; thoracic dorsum usually lacking coarse punctures, usually with dense reticulation (and then dull) or very dense but fine puncturation; propodeum deeply reticulate; forewing with rather sparse pilosity, with a large speculum anteriorly reaching virtually the distal end of the marginal vein, thus making conspicuous a row of longish hairs on the underside, below the marginal vein; marginal vein more than twice as long as stigmal, postmarginal vein usually only slightly longer than the stigmal; legs usually more or less infuscate.

Diparinae

Lelaps striatus, from here.

Belongs within: Chalcidoidea.

The Diparinae are a group of chalcidoid wasps found primarily in leaf litter. Many species are strongly sexually dimorphic: males are usually macropterous, but females may be brachypterous or apterous (Desjardins 2007).

Characters (from Bouček 1988, Desjardins 2007): Antenna 13-segmented. Scutellum varied, but never smooth and convex. Metacoxa inserted unusually high, usually with transverse striations on posterior margin. Gastral tergite 1 usually expanded to cover at least half of metasoma. Cercal brush present. Females often apterous or brachypterous.

Belongs within: Ormocerinae.

Trichilogaster is a genus of wasps forming galls on Acacia species (Bouček 1988).

Characters (from Bouček 1988): Body robust, often partly rufous or yellowish brown, with thorax short and convex, sometimes broader than head, always sculptured, sometimes rather coarsely. Head with broadly concave occiput and convex frons; scrobes not large but sometimes reaching ocellus. Clypeus produced, bilobate. Antennae at centre of face or slightly above, formula 11263; anelli large, flagellum in female subfiliform. clava symmetric. Pronotum nearly as broad as scutum, medially short; notauli narrow but deep; axillae slightly advanced, medially almost meeting. Scutellum slightly oblong, with admarginai groove, apex closely applied to raised middle of dorsellum (in side view). Propodeum often with longitudinal rugae or at least with weak median carina and curved plicae posteriorly. Hind tibia with 2 spurs. Forewing with veins rather short, the marginal and base of postmarginal slightly thickened, stigma often knobbed; often infumation present below parastigma. Gaster short and high but collapsing rather irregularly; hind margins of tergites 1 and 2 emarginate, exposing large third tergite, this often with coarse sculpture.

Chromeurytominae

Male Chromeurytoma, from John Heraty.

Belongs within: Chalcidoidea.

The Chromeurytominae are an Australian group of chalcidoid wasps associated with plant gall-makers and leaf-miners.

Characters (from Bouček 1988): Antennal flagellum with just six segments between pedicel and clava; the first of which may be anelliiform, short, but not a true anellus. Female clava at least slightly asymmetric, with more or less oblique sutures and a collapsing area of weaker sclerotisation and with special short trichoid sensilla. Scrobal cavity evident but not well delimited, ending far from ocellus; in lower part divided by an interantennal crest. Parascrobal areas convex. Antennae inserted below lower ocular line, at the convex but not well defined clypeus, the lower margin of which is arcuately produced and stout. Both mandibles 3-toothed. Malar groove ending at a finely margined and sometimes slightly depressed mouth border. Occipital carina present, of torymid form, but occasionally obsolete (in one species). Surface of body generally shiny, mostly shallowly cross-striate to smooth, mostly sparsely pilose (hairs on papillae), mostly with metallic gloss but in at least two species the gloss is absent. Pronotum fairly large and quadrangular, anteriorly often edged or carinate. Scutum rather short and broad, with deep complete notauli; frenal line distinct but weak, situated far before the apex of the scutellum. Mesopleuron bearing peculiar pit-like depressions. Propodeum bearing medially a large, depressed, subtriangular to cordiform area, which is often divided by a median carina; median area is delimited on sides by converging channels marking on inner side the convex smooth plical swellings which laterally merge with postspiracular sulci; posterior to the median area is a very short nuchal ring set off by a transverse groove. Mid tibia with a rather long spur, often longer than the basitarsus; hind tibia with two spurs. In the forewing the stigmal vein has a distinct uncus, the postmarginal vein is often at least as long as the marginal. Gaster on a mostly visible petiole, basal three tergites large, third usually larger than second; gastral body is strongly convex. Ovipositor sheaths are usually distinctly protruding, up to as long as gaster. Cerci always elongate.

Cerocephalinae

Cerocephala eccoptogastri, from here.

Belongs within: Chalcidoidea.

The Cerocephalinae are a group of wasps that parasitise small wood-boring beetles such as Scolytidae and Anobiidae (Bouček 1988).

Characters (from Bouček 1988): Antennae inserted always some distance above the mouth border, toruli separated by an interantennal crest which often forms a tooth; sometimes other ridges, often with teeth, are developed on either side of toruli; antennae rather shiny, with sparse pilosity and very low sensilla, often pale-coloured; eyes bare or nearly so; thorax frequently smooth, only rarely with rugosity, but propodeum always heavily sculptured, without smooth areas, except in dwarf forms in which all sculpture is obliterated. Forewing usually with strongly reduced discal pilosity but always with very conspicuous marginal fringe; short stigmal vein at a rather acute angle, postmarginal vein often shorter than stigmal. Gastral petiole sometimes long, sometimes strongly transverse; hind margin of first gastral terglte in females often emarginate or even deeply excised in the middle; ovipositor sheaths subexserted or longer, up to almost as long as the gaster. Short-winged forms common.
