Syncarida

Allobathynella japonica, from Morimoto & Miura (1957).

Belongs within: Eumalacostraca.
Contains: Bathynella, Hexabathynella, Iberobathynella.

The Syncarida are a group of malacostracan crustaceans found primarily in fresh water that lack a carapace. Living examples are divided between the Anaspidacea, in which the first thoracic segment is fused to the head and a tail fan is present, and the minute Bathynellacea that lack a tail fan.

Beyrichioidea

Male (above) and female Kloedenia normalis, from Benson et al. (1961).

Belongs within: Palaeocopida.
Contains: Beyrichia.

The Beyrichioidea are a group of ostracods known from the mid-Ordovician to the early Permian characterised by the dimorphic development of a ventral to anteroventral lobe or pouch in females. The hinge of the carapace is straight but the Silurian Zygobolbidae have the lateral lobes L2 and L3 tending to project above the level of the dorsum (Benson et al. 1961).

Characters (from Benson et al. 1961): Straight-hinged ostracodes with subequal ends or forward swing, mostly with well-developed lobes and sulci and showing tendency to have carinal, velate, and marginal structures; dimorphism usually well defined.
