Agrilinae

Ethon latipennis, from Brisbane Insects.

Belongs within: Buprestidae.
Contains: Agrilus, Aphanisticus, Cisseis.

The Agrilinae are a group of jewel beetles characterised by a sternal cavity (receiving the prosternal process) formed in more or less equal parts by the mesosternum and metasternum. Members of the tribes Aphanisticini and Tracheini have mesocoxae more widely separated than the procoxae and legs with relatively short tarsi whereas Agrilini and Coraebini have procoxae and mesocoxae more or less equidistant and relatively long tarsi.

Buprestinae

Western cedar borer Trachykele blondeli, copyright Kildale.

Belongs within: Buprestidae.
Contains: Chrysobothris, Buprestis, Bubastini, Dicercini, Anthaxia, Neocuris, Melanophilini, Temognatha, Calodema, Stigmodera, Curis.

The Buprestinae are a group of jewel beetles characterised by the possession of antennae with arrays of pores concentrated in well defined, usually apical depressions on the antennal segments. In members of the tribes Anthaxiini, Melanophilini and Maoraxia, the metepimeron is at least partially covered by a broad anterolateral projection of the abdomen. The metepimeron is uncovered in Buprestini, Bubastini and Dicercini (Bellamy & Williams 1985).

Cardiophorinae

Paracardiophorus musculus, copyright Hungarian Natural History Museum.

Belongs within: Elateridae.

The Cardiophorinae are a group of click beetles united by the presence of two sublateral carinae and incisions on the base of the pronotum, a truncate prosternal spine, a cordate scutellum, and larvae with exodont mandibles (Calder 1996).

Characters (from Calder 1996): Head more or less convex anteriorly. Frontoclypeal region raised above plane of labrum forming wide transverse region between basal articulations of antennae. Frontal carina complete across front between eyes. Pronotum usually wider than long, occasionally as wide as long. Base of pronotum with two sublateral carinae and incisions. Prosternal spine (posterior to procoxae) about same length as coxal diameter, truncate apically. Scutellum cordate with strongly pointed apex. Meso-trochantin not visible. Mesocoxal cavity closed to mesepisternum and mesepimeron. Hind wing with short radial cell; vein MP4 without apparent cross vein to CuA2; wedge cell absent; apex of wing membrane (without membrane) fairly long occupying at least one-quarter of length of wing membrane; apical sclerotisations various. Tarsomeres usually simple, tarsomere 4 strongly expanded laterally and cordiform in Cardiotarsus. Tarsal claws without basal setae on outer flat portion. Female genitalia with large glandular reservoir entering bursa copulatrix on mid-ventral surface.

Eucnemidae

Flightless eucnemids, photographed by S. E. Thorpe.

Belongs within: Elateroidea.

The Eucnemidae, false click beetles, are a group of beetles resembling the click beetles of the Elateridae in possessing a ventral click process between the prothorax and mesothorax but differing in having all five abdominal ventrites connate. Larvae are found in dead wood but their exact habits are uncertain (Lawrence & Britton 1991).

Characters (from Lawrence & Britton 1991): Elongate, cylindrical to slightly flattened, compact, usually finely pubescent and with acute posterior angles on pronotum; labrum concealed beneath clypeus; antennae eleven-segmented, sometimes received in grooves just beneath lateral pronotal carinae or ventrally crossing or bordering notosternal suture; fore coxae globular, trochantins concealed, fore coxal cavities externally and internally open; clicking device present involving prosternal process and mesosternal cavity; mid coxal cavities narrowly separated, laterally open; tarsi pentamerous, usually simple, rarely bearing membranous appendages on segments 2–4; abdomen with five ventrites, all connate. Larvae usually flattened, with no legs and reduced head with minute antennae and non-opposable or immovable mandibles.

Cantharidae

Plague soldier beetle Chauliognathus lugubris, copyright Fir0002/Flagstaffotos.

Belongs within: Elateroidea.
Contains: Heteromastix, Telephorus, Cantharis.

The Cantharidae are a group of soft-bodied beetles that are usually coloured in contrasting patterns of yellow and black, reflecting their production of distasteful defensive chemicals. Larvae are found in soil and leaf litter; most are predators though some are phytophagous (Lawrence & Britton 1991).

Characters (from Lawrence & Britton 1991): Elongate, parallel-sided, soft-bodied, usually in various combinations of yellow and black or bluish black; head relatively large and deflexed; labrum membranous, often inconspicuous; antennal insertions well separated; antenna eleven-segmented, filiform; pronotum oval or subquadrate and flattened; fore coxae projecting, trochantins exposed, fore coxal cavities externally and internally open; mid coxal cavities medially contiguous, laterally open; tarsi pentamerous, fourth tarsal segment bilobed; abdomen with seven or eight ventrites, none connate; male genitalia usually large, asymmetrical, exposed. Larva elongate, lightly sclerotised (although often darkly pigmented or patterned), with characteristic clothing of fine, velvety pile; stemmata well developed; mandibles more or less falcate; gular region well developed, without or with fused sutures; paired glandular openings on all thoracic and abdominal segments; segment 10 reduced and terminal.

Lycidae

Macrolycus flabellatus, copyright Y. J. Chang.

Belongs within: Elateroidea.
Contains: Trichalus, Lycini, Metriorrhynchus.

The Lycidae are a group of soft-bodied beetles with narrow, dehiscent elytra that are generally coloured in contrasting aposematic patterns of reddish yellow and black. The distasteful lycids often function as models in mimicry complexes.
