Melampinae

Eastern melampus Melampus bidentatus, from here.

Belongs within: Pulmonata.

The Melampinae are a group of ellobiid gastropods differing from other members of the family in the presence of a planktonic larval stage (Frias Martins 1996).

Characters (from Frias Martins 1996): Protoconch heterostrophic, showing one-half of nuclear whorls above teleoconch. Reproductive system semidiaulic, with short spermoviduct, non-glandular pallial ducts, spermathecal duct entering at or near proximal end of vagina; penial complex very elongated, with marked proximal and distal portions, penis present at origin of distal portion, or absent with vas deferens opening at proximal end of penial complex through short, straight tube. Visceral nerve ring short.

Dentalium

Dentalium elephantium, from here.

Belongs within: Scaphopoda.

Dentalium is a cosmopolitan genus of tusk shells known from the Middle Triassic to the present day. In members of the type subgenus, the shell is prismatic or strongly ribbed, with a polygonal cross-section toward the apex. The subgenus Antalis is less strongly ribbed than Dentalium sensu stricto, without a polygonal cross-section and often with a V-shaped notch on or near the convex side of the apex. Fissidentalium species are large and solid with many longitudinal ribs and often with a long slit at the apex (Ludbrook 1960).

Characters (from Ludbrook 1960): Shell curved and tapering, longitudinally sculptured, smooth or annulated. Embryonic whorls minute, fragile, lost at an early growth stage. Apex commonly modified by slit or notch due to absorption. Anterior aperture circular or oblique, in many forms modified by longitudinal ribbing.

Indotritia

Indotritia javensis, from here.

Belongs within: Ptyctima.

Indotritia is a cosmopolitan genus of euphthiracaroid box mites (Subías 2004). Most species possess an ano-adanal cleft on the venter and two lateral carinae on the aspis but the ano-adanal cleft is absent and only a single lateral carina is present on the aspis of the Australasian subgenus Zeaotritia (Balogh & Balogh 1992).

Characters (from Balogh & Balogh 1992, as Indotritia + Zeaotritia): Aspis with one or two lateral carinae. Genito-aggenital suture incomplete, genital and aggenital plates anteriorly fused, posteriorly separate; genital setae in paraxial position, in longitudinal row; interlocking triangle absent.

Acrotritia

Acrotritia sp., copyright Scott Justis.

Belongs within: Ptyctima.

Acrotritia is a cosmopolitan genus of box mites that has often been referred to by the junior synonymous name Rhysotritia (Subías 2004). The type species A. ardua is cosmopolitan in distribution; its distinctive features include a smooth dorsal surface and a gradually thickened, setulose head on the sensillus.

Characters (from Balogh & Balogh 1992a, as Rhysotritia): Interlamellar setae of normal length, originating far from bothridium. Trochanters III and IV with two setae; genu IV with at least one seta. Notogaster with V-shaped split ventrally. Plates of anogenital region fused into one pair of anogenital plates; one interlocking triangle present in middle of anogenital region; genital setae in paraxial position, in longitudinal row.
