Ocimeae

American mint Hyptis suaveolens, photographed by Nirmal Roberts.

Belongs within: Lamiaceae.

The Ocimeae is a clade within the Lamiaceae including basils (Ocimum spp.), lavenders (Lavandula spp.) and related taxa. Monophyly of the group is supported by the presence of dorsiflexed synthecous anthers (Paton et al. 2004). Ocimum species are used as culinary herbs whereas Lavandula species are significant sources of essential oils. Hyptis, the bushmints, is a genus of herbs and subshrubs found in Africa and the Americas with a pouched lower corolla lip and densely stellate-hairy stems (Hickman 1993).
